Mangaluru 5th August: The Mangaluru Chapter conducted an art workshop for school students at St. Aloysius Gonzaga School. The workshop was conducted the mural art style of the region also known as Kavvi Kale. Shri Janardhan Havanje, artist and research scholar was the resource person for the workshop; he spoke to the students about the workshop and guided them. 51 students from 8 schools of the city participated in the workshop. Mr. William Pias, an author and philanthropist addressing the students highlighted the importance of practicing art to explore heritage and livelihood.
Varanasi 11th August: The Varanasi Chapter conducted an art workshop for school students at Sunbeam School, Mughalsarai. The workshop focused on the Banaras Traditional Art. The workshop introduction was given by Mr. Ashok Kapoor, Convenor Varanasi Chapter. The resource persons for this workshop were Mr. Jayendra Mishra and Daya Shanker. 55 students from various schools of the city participated in the workshop.
Dehradun 21st August: The Dehradun Chapter conducted a craft workshop for school students 90 students from 6 schools of the city participated in the workshop. The workshop was organized at Dekyiling Tibetan Colony at the crafts works of Exile Creations. The focus of the workshop was Tibetan handicraft like weaving and bead making crafts which are endangered. The students were then taken to three different workshops within the settlement where they observed and learnt apron weaving, bead making and stained glass painting.
Dhar 25th August: The Chapter conducted an art workshop on “traditional clay craft” for school students at Bhoj Research Institute. The focus of the workshop was on the environmental viability of traditional clay idols. The workshop was held on 2 days, on the first day students were taught how to make an idol with clay and the second day, participants painted their idols with natural colours. Through the workshop, students made clay idols of Lord Ganesha and avowed not to use idols made of synthetic material and colour, in order to preserve and protect the environment.
Bhagalpur 29th August: The chapter organized a craft awareness workshop for school students. 66 students from 6 schools of the city participated in the workshop. The resource person for this workshop was Shri Manoj Kumar Pandit, he is a renowned Manjusha Guru and spoke to the students about a traditional form of worship Bihula Vishahari and the historical significance of the Manjusha painting, and its relation to the republic of Anga.
Santiniketan 31st August and 1st September: The chapter conducted a craft workshop for school students on Shola Shilpo at Bolpur High School. 50 students from 5 schools of Bolpur and adjoin areas participated in the workshop. Sri Prabhat Bagdi, an ex student of Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati and his associates guided the students on the workshop. Shola an endangered art form of the region was chosen as it is one of the oldest soft art forms of Bengal. The students through the workshop learnt the difference between true shoal and its cheap easily available imitation the chemical thermocol. Students made different kinds of items such as birds, butterflies, flowers etc with a great enthusiasm.
Gorakhpur 22nd September: The Chapter organized an art workshop for school students. 98 students from 8 schools of the city participated in this workshop. The workshop focused on Kohbar Painting, a style of painting which is intertwined with the social customs of the region. The programme began with a session with Dr. Nisha Jaiswal, Associate Professor of DDU, Gorakhpur University, an artist herself specializing in miniature painting; she spoke to the students about the importance of details in a Kohbar painting, which signifies love and prosperity in a marriage. The trainer for this workshop was Dr. Kumud Singh, Head of Painting Department at the KS Saket Post Graduate College, also a practitioner of this art form, having displayed her work in numerous exhibitions.
Solapur 25th September: The Solapur Chapter, conducted a workshop for school students on the traditional Lamhani Embroidery at S.R Girls’ School, Sevasadan. 60 students from 15 schools of the city participated in the event. The Chapter collaborated with Mrs. Mallamma Yelawar of the Sabala Handicrafts, Vijayapur. Dr. Sheelatai Mistry, Vice- President- Sevasadan was the chief guest for the event. Dr. Mistry said it was our duty towards our cultural heritage to assimilate the arts from the Adivasis. The resource persons for this workshop were from Sabla Handicrafts namely - Ms. Renuka Kattimani, Ms. Geeta Gurjar, Ms. Nemibai Rathod, Ms. Sushilabai Rathod and Ms. Malashree Rathod. Sushilabai Rathod wore the traditional Lamhani attire so that the participants get an idea of the way the various stitches and mirror work is used in their daily lives. The workshop was greatly appreciated by students and accompanying teachers who got a unique opportunity to learn a new craft
Udaipur 12th October: The chapter conducted a workshop on Phad painting and miniature art at St. Anthony’s School. The chapter invited Shri Om Prakash Soni and Dr. Shalini Nathaniel as experts to guide the students on miniature art and Shri Abhishek Joshi guided the participants on Phad painting. The experts addressed the students on both the selected art forms before commencing the workshop. 76 students from 16 schools participated in the workshop. The Chief Guest for the event was Shri SK Verma, IFS (R), Principal of the host school Shri William D’Souza was also present for the workshop and felicitated the resource persons.
Palakkad 21st October: The chapter conducted a workshop on shadow puppetry and puppet making from the region called Tholpaavakoothu. The workshop was organized as part of a heritage meet called Palmyra for the schools of the district. 40 students from 14 schools participated in the workshop. Lakshmana Pulavar, the son legendary master Krishnankutty Pulavar and an accomplished artist himself guided the students, along with his associates.Through the workshop students were given an interesting lecture demonstration on art of shadow puppetry, apart from that students and teachers also learnt to make puppets. At the end of the workshop students were shown a brilliant demonstration of Tholpavakoothu.
East Godavari 3rd November: The chapter conducted a workshop on Timber Toy-making an endangered craft in this region at the P. R. Govt. College. The Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Andhra Pradesh Government, Sri M. Francis was the Chief Guest for the event, and Dr. C. Krishna, Principal of the College as the Guest of Honour. Over 80 students from 12 schools of the city participated in the workshop. Sri Korumilli Nageswara Rao was the resource person for this workshop. He spoke to the students about the history of the craft form and its importance. The students were fascinated and thrilled to see how the toys are made and some of them also tried their hands.
Kasargod 11th November: The chapter conducted a workshop for school students on Gond painting at the Rani Durgavati Sangrahalaya. The chapter invited Dr. S.K. Tiwari, Retd. Professor, Head of Tribal Studies University of Jabalpur and Dr. Aruna, who heads the Department of Painting at the MKB Government PG College as resource persons for this workshop. The experts addressed the participants on the origins and history of this painting style, along with its characteristic features. Dr. Aruna gave a painting demonstration to the students. 87 students from 4 schools attended the workshop. The chapter also prepared and published a folder on Gond painting for information of participating students and teachers. The publication was also shared with local media.
Jabalpur 13th November: The chapter organized a training workshop on Coconut leaf Crafts at St. BASB School, Bela. The purpose of the workshop was to allow children to interact with nature and to teach them the importance of coconut leaves in human lives and to capture coconut leaf crafts heritage which is withdrawing slowly from everyday life as plastic has replaced coconut leaf crafts. 94 students from 2 schools participated in the workshop. Eminent coconut leaf craft artists Mr. Renjith Kadamanitta and Vishnu Muraleedharan were the resource persons for this workshop. Under the guidance of the experts, students made toys like birds, balls, different types of decorative items, necklace, head band, snakes and many other items from coconut leaves. The student enthusiastically participated in the workshop.
Vadodara 20th November: The Chapter conducted a craft workshop for school students on Endangered Craft Traditions of Gujarat as part of its activities celebrating Heritage Week. 80 students from 6 schools of the city participated in the event organized at Bright Day School, CBSE Unit. The resource persons for this workshop were Shri Ishwar Singh from Alwar Rajasthan & Nasir Khatri from Bhuj Kutch. The workshop was organized in collaboration with MRID- Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad Institute of Design - The M S University of Baroda.
Mandi 24th November: The chapter conducted a workshop on the “Mandi Kalam” style of painting. The workshop was conducted in two phases. This style of miniature painting was selected by the chapter as it allowed students not only to learn an art form but also know better the history and heritage of their own region. Over 80 students from 10 schools of the city participated in the workshop. Shri Rajesh Kumar, an artist and researcher was the resource person for the workshop. He spoke to the students about the historical development of this painting style and the features of the Mandi Kalam in terms of use of colours and themes painted. Shri Ashutosh Garg, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the district, chief guest for the event was very appreciative of the workshop and said that such initiatives will go a long way in preserving the heritage of the region.
Jamshedpur 11th and 12th December: The chapter conducted a workshop for school students of the city on Pyatkar painting. The event was organized at JUSCO School, Kadma and Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Bistupur. The workshop was conducted by Shri Vijay Chitrakar, a prominent pyatkar painter. 87 students were part of this workshop. Through this workshop the students were not only introduced to Pyatkar painting as an art form but were also introduced to the historical significance of this painting style from this region. The artists also explained to the students the features of the painting. Shri Amitava Ghosh, co – convener Jamshedpur chapter spoke to the students about the natural colours and pigments used in this traditional art form and how this is fast disappearing due to lack of awareness, he asked students to be active citizens in order to protect and preserve their heritage.
The INTACH Faridabad Chapter organized a Heritage Monuments Painting Competition at Aggarwal College for Women, Ballabhgarh in which 50 girls of Young INTACH members took part in the event. A total of 5 prizes were given by us. The Chapter has also started restoration work “Rani ki Chhatri,” Ballabhgarh with a target of 8/9 months.
The Heritage Education and Communication Service(HECS) Division of INTACH in collaboration with Quizcraft Global organised the National Finals of the INTACH Heritage Quiz,2019 at INTACH, New Delhi on 5th-6th December. The Quiz saw, over 103 city rounds and 20 state rounds conducted by INTACH Chapters in collaboration with Quizcraft. Winning Teams from 18 State Finals participated in the Finals, namely Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, North East Mega Final, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand, Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Delhi and Delhi NCR.
On 5th December, the finalists were invited to INTACH for an introductory session. The event began with Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director (Heritage Education and Communication Service- HECS) welcoming the students and teachers/parents to Delhi. The Member secretary of INTACH Dr. (Mrs.) C. T. Misra also welcomed the students and gave a word of encouragement. She also handed over to the students a Heritage Passport and the Young INTACH Badge. This was followed by screening of the INTACH Film.
After the lunch break, Mrs. Purnima Datt, Principal Director (Heritage Education and Communication Service- HECS) acquainted the students about the work done by HECS, which was followed by screening of the HECS film highlighting the activities undertaken by the division. The students and teachers were then taken for a heritage walk to Lodhi Gardens and after the walk a visit to the conservation lab was carried out, where the students got the opportunity to see the interesting work of conservation on paintings, textiles etc. A draw of lots was also conducted for the Semifinal rounds.
On 6th December, the event began with a introduction to the quiz format by Mr. Aditya Mubai and Mr. Siddhartha Kurapati, the quizmasters .The rounds consisted of four semifinals, wherein the winners of each semifinal qualified for the National Final round.
The teams for the first semifinal were Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kochi,Kerala; DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Odisha ;Timpany Sr.Sec.School ,Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh; MPVM Ganga Gurukulam,Allahabad,Uttar Pradesh; and Happy Days School,Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh.
The winner of this round was DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Odisha.
Semifinal round two participants were DPS Jodhpur,Rajasthan; Bright Day School,Vadodara,Gujarat; DAV Public School,Patiala,Punjab;Mukand Lal Public School, Yamuna Nagar , Haryana; Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, New Delhi.
The winner of this round was Bright Day School,Vadodara,Gujarat.
Semifinal round three participants were Holitoli School,Dimapur,Nagaland , Udayachal High School, Mumbai, Maharashtra; Vivekananda Public School, Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh;

Semi round four participants were DAV Public School,Bariatu,Ranchi,Jharkhand; Sri Kumaran’s Children’s Home, Bangalore, Karnataka; Teja Vidyalaya, Kodad, Telangana; Bhavan’s Gandhi Vidyalaya, Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu.
The winner of this round was Teja Vidyalaya, Kodad, Telangana.
The winner of the INTACH Heritage Quiz 2019 was DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Odisha. Teja Vidyalaya, Kodad, Telangana secured the second position, Bright Day School,Vadodara,Gujarat secured the third position while on the fourth position were Vivekananda Public School, Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh. The event culminated with words of encouragement and appreciation by Maj Gen (Retd) L K Gupta, Chairman, INTACH and Dr. (Mrs.) C. T. Misra,Member Secretary,INTACH followed by distribution of prizes and books.
The Exhibition- INTACH journey has been inaugurated on December 18th, 2019 at Sunbeam School Lahartara (Member School) by Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Mishra along with Dr. O. P. Kejriwal, Advisor Varanasi Chapter and Life member INTACH. It was attended by large number of members despite being a working day. Dr. Kejriwal spoke about Varanasi Chapter growth in last 4 years under new leadership. Mr. Ashok Kapoor, Convener gave details of INTACH Varanasi activities. Ms. Anuradha Raturi conducted the programme and also gave details of various INTACH Divisions and its activities. Pandit Sajan Mishra spoke about Classical music traditions of Banaras and need to preserve the same. He offered his support for publishing a book on this by INTACH. Mrs. Mudita Kapoor, a life member INTACH made a PPT on important Heritage sites of Banaras which was very much appreciated by all present. Deepak Madhok, Chairman Sunbeam Group and Life member INTACH proposed vote of thanks and also assured full support to Chapter. Snacks were also arranged for the members by the school.
As part of the Exhibition, two activities were also organised on Sunday December 22nd at Venue itself. Students of two Institutional member schools attended the activities. Prof suresh Nair, Asst Prof BHU conducted drawing workshop for students of Rajghat Besant School. Prof Nair, a Fulbright scholar is INTACH Life Member. Daya Shanker conducted the workshop for Sunbeam school Lahartara students. A Film on Rashtrapati Bhawan was also screened.
The INTACH Jamnagar Chapter organized workshops on the occasion of Heritage Week on 30th November at the INTACH Jamnagar office. The workshops were on the following crafts:-
These are all part of our heritage and culture. It was a fun workshop with some guests attending to see what INTACH Jamnagar Chapter offers our youngsters in learning arts and crafts which are part of our Cultural Heritage. INTACH aims to outreach Students from various Institutions to promote Heritage awareness in some forgotten crafts which are dying due to technology. A lot of work is machine based but we want our younger generations to learn the physical aspect of creating these beautiful crafts.
Kurukshetra 18th July: The chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Kurukshetra Panorama and Science Centre. The Chancellor of Kurukshetra University Shri Kailash Chandra Sharma was the chief guest for the event. 84 students from various schools of the city participated in the event. The event was also covered by local media.
Ambala, 6th August: The INTACH Heritage Quiz 2019 was held in Army Public School, Ambala Cantt. 116 children from 15 schools participated. Lt Gen KS Dogra, was the Chief Guest while Brigadier M S Tomar was invited as the Guest of Honour. Police DAV School won the first prize, while the CJM stood second and the Army school third. The event was very well received.
Gurgaon, 20th August: INTACH HERITAGE QUIZ was organized by INTACH Gurugram Chapter at Ryan International School to bring awareness among the students about the importance of preserving our cultural, architectural, natural, intangible cultural activity. Students from eighteen schools from Gurugram participated. DAV Public School, Sector-14 won the first prize.
Hisar, 26th August: INTACH Hisar Chapter conducted the heritage quiz at Little Kingdom School. 90 students from 12 schools participated. Harshit and Jiya from Delhi Public School Hisar secured the first position.
Panipat, 27th August: The Panipat city round of the INTACH Heritage Quiz was held at SDVM City, Panipat. 86 students from eight schools participated. Convenor, Mr Suresh Guglani along with Co-convenor Indira Khurana and Chairman of SDPG College, Mr. S N Gupta were present for the quiz. The event was well covered by the local media.
Brajbhoomi, 10th August: Brij Bhoomi Regional chapter, organised city round of INTACH INDIA HERITAGE QUIZ 2019 at Gyan Mahavidyalaya, Agra Road Aligarh. The quiz received a good response with as many as 47 teams among 94 students of class 7th to 10th from nine reputed schools participating with much enthusiasm. Inaugurating the programme as the chief Guest, Rotarian and social activist Mr. Mukesh Singhal appreciated the efforts of INTACH for creating awareness among the young minds on the need for preserving the great heritage and culture.
Varanasi 14th August: The INTACH Heritage Quiz was organised at Aryan International School. 130 students from 14 schools participated A very old institutional member, Rajghat Besant School also participated for the first time.
Lalitpur24th August: The chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Government Inter- College. Students from 12 schools of the city participated in the event. The competition was widely covered by the local media.
Gorakhpur, 25th August: The City round of quiz contest of Gorakhpur took place at St. Joseph's college of women, civil lines Gorakhpur. 11 schools of Gorakhpur with 92 children participated in the event. The programme was conducted By Dr Mumtaz khan co-convenor of Gorakhpur chapter who after welcoming all students and teacher gave details and procedure of quiz contest. SS academy, Gas Godam gali Vijai chowk Gorakhpur won the quiz.
Dehradun, 20th August: The city round of the INTACH Heritage Quiz was organized by the INTACH Dehradun chapter at Jaswant Modern School, 91, Rajpur Road, Dehra Dun on 20th August’19. A total of 56 students from 28 teams participated in the event. Vinayak Ohri and Shailesh Oli from Jaswant Modern School were adjudged the winners of the event.
Mangalore, 20th August: 19 team from four schools participated in the INTACH Heritage Quiz conducted by the Mangalore Chapter for the first time. Besant English School emerged as the topper among the four to get the first position to represent Mangaluru in the state level Quiz.
Bijapur, 22nd August: 9 schools with two teams each (Total 18 teams) attended the INTACH Heritage Quiz at Bijapur. Dr R K Kulkarni (Retd) professor, English inaugurated the event and Dr Madbhavi M S distributed prizes and certificates. Dr V D Aiholi was the quiz master. Oxford School stood first and the team from St Joseph’s came second.
Bagalkot, 24th August: Bagalkot chapter organized the INTACH heritage quiz competition on 24th August in Government Girl’s Pre University College, Bagalkot. 94 students from nine schools participated. Dr. Arun Miskin inaugurated the function. Shri M.B Doddappanavar, vice principal of the host school was the Chief Guest. Akshata and Anusha from Basaweshwara girl’s school won the first prize.
Darjeeling, 22nd August: INTACH Darjeeling chapter organized the city round quiz Contest among the school students at Mirik, on 22nd august 2019. Very few schools could take part in the contest but the teams from those schools which took part, were in big numbers. The quiz was conducted by a teacher of Mirik H.S. School who is popularly known as quiz Master in the Mirik valley.
Kolkata, 24th August:
INTACH Heritage Quiz 2019 competition (city round) was held on 24th August,2019 in Shri Shikshyatan School, Kolkata. In this competition 5 schools with a total of 32 students participated .The programme was conducted by Mr.G.M.Kapur and Ms.Kanchana Mukhopadhyay,Co - convenor, INTACH, Kolkata Chapter.
Solapur, 24th July: INTACH India Heritage Quiz was conducted by INTACH Solapur Chapter at Mule Hall, H. D. High School, Solapur. In all 19 schools- 39 teams and 77 students participated in the quiz competition. The team from Late V. M. Mehta High School, comprising of Miss Gauri Anuse and Master Sanchit Deshmukh emerged as the winners.
Nashik, 23rd August: Around 16 schools from across the city with 100 students participated in the INTACH Heritage quiz held at Nashik. The team from Vidya Probodhini Prashala emerged victorious after final round qualified for the state finals.
Mumbai, 23rd August: INTACH Greater Mumbai Chapter, in collaboration with Thinq2win conducted INTACH Heritage Quiz 2019 at Dr.BhauDaji Lad Museum. The quiz was hosted by Host Prafull Devale and was prepared by Quizmasters Omkar Yarguddi and Omkar Dhakephalkar from Thinq2win. 88 students from 24 schools took part. Jaishankar Mishra- 10th and Soumya Moharer-10th from Udayachal high School were the winners.
Wai Panchgani, 24th August:
Intach Quiz Competition was successfully held in Wai on 24th August, Saturday at Kanya Shala, Wai. 129 students from various schools participated. Prof. Vishnu Khare was the Chief Guest of the programme.
Dibrugarh, 17th August: A total of 116 students from 10 different schools from Dibrugarh District participated in the INTACH Heritage Quiz. The quiz was conducted by Mr Dudul Das, PhD Scholar from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, Assam. Shiksha Valley School was the host school.
Dimapur, 29th August: INTACH Nagaland conducted the quiz in Dimapur at Don Bosco Institute of Development and Learning. 31 teams from seven schools participated. The team of Ikusa Yeptho and Shlok Mundhra from Hollotoli School emerged as the winners. The quiz was covered by the local media.
Jalandhar, 28th August: INTACH Jalandhar Chapter conducted a quiz test on culture and heritage at MGN Adharsh Nagar. 225 students from 29 schools participated. Mr Diparva Lakra, IAS, Commissioner Municipal was the chief Guest. He stressed the need to pay attention to built as well as intangible culture. Maj. Gen. JDS Bedi was the quiz master who kept the tempo of discussion very high. Fox TV Punjab, Fast ways and Doordarshan covered the event. Poilce D A V school students were the winners.
Srikakulam 27th July: The Chapter conducted the Heritage Quiz at Akshara School. 76 students from 10 schools of the city participated in the event. Sri N. Narayana Rao, district Tourism Officer was the chief guest for the event. The event was widely covered by the local media.
East Godavari 4th August:
The East Godavari Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at Kakinada and Tuni respectively. The event in Kakinada was hosted at PR Government Degree College, here 178 students from 12 schools participated in the event. The quiz in Tuni was organized at Subham Hall, here 100 students from 11 schools participated.
Kurnool 5th August:
The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Municipal Corporation High School. 100 students from 10 schools of the city participated in the event. The event was also covered by local media.
Ukkunagaram 19th August:
The Visakhapatnam Chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz at Chaitanaya Public School. 62 students from 6 schools of the city participated in the event. Chapter members and Convener Visakhapatnam present at the venue aided the smooth functioning of the event.
Visakhapatnam 21st August: The chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Visakha Valley School. 70 students from 7 schools of the city participated in the event.
Guntur 24th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan 134 students from various schools of the city participated in the event.
Anantapur 25th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at Rotary English Medium High School. 76 students from 20 schools participated in the event. The event was also covered by the local media and was well – received by the teachers and students.
Hyderabad, August: The Hyderabad Chapter conducted 5 city rounds for the Quiz this year including Hyderabad and adjoining cities namely – Kottagudem, Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam. The event was very received by students and teachers at all of these places. Over 400 students participated in the event organized in these districts.
Kasargod 8th and 17th July: The chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage quiz at Government High School Kalichanadukkam, here 66 students participated in the event. The quiz held at Alphonsa Central School, Kannur district saw the participation of 40 students. Through the event students were also addressed on the importance of heritage education and awareness especially in the Indian context.
Coimbatore 4th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan Matriculation Higher Secondary School. 130 students from 17 schools of the city and its adjoining areas such as Erode, Mettupalayam and Pollachi participated in the event. The competition was also well - publicized by the local media.
Chennai 8th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at Vidyodaya School. 54 teams from 19 schools of the city participated in the event. Mr. Pratik Sudha Murli also addressed the students drawing their attention to lesser known folk art forms of India.
Nagapattinam 20th August: The Tamilnadu State Chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz for school students of Nagapattinam and its adjoining districts namely Velankanni, Thiruvarur and Karaikal. The event saw the participation of 444 students from various schools.
Thanjavur 22nd August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at St. Antony’s Higher Secondary School. 370 students from 18 schools of the city participated in the event, through the event the students were also told about INTACH and its activities.
Jamshedpur 28th June: The Chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz at People’s Academy High School, Baradwari. The event saw the participation of 55 students from 8 government school of the East – Singbhum region. On this occasion, the convener addressing the students spoke to the students about what comprises heritage and the urgent need to protect and preserve it.
Balasore 11th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz at Public School Nodal High School, 96 students from 11 schools participated in the event. The event was very well covered by the local media.
Mayurbhanj 18th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at Retired Government Employees Association Hall, Baripada. 80 students from 10 schools of the city participated in the region. Through the event the students were familiarized with the work of INTACH by a short address delivered by the convener.
Bhadrak 25th August: The chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz at Nityananda Bhawan. 62 students from 9 schools of the city participated in the event. The competition was also reported by the local media.
Sonepur 8th September: The chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz at Maharaja High School. 66 students from various high schools of the city participated in the event.
Bikaner 28th July: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Seth Tolaram Bafna Secondary School with the support of the city’s Rotary Club. 156 students from 12 schools of the city participated in the event. The event was also covered by the local media.
Udaipur 10th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Maharana Mewar Public School. 152 students from 16 schools of the city participated in the event. The event also received a good coverage by the local media.
Bhilwara 26th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Maharana Mewar Public School. 152 students from 16 schools of the city participated in the event. The event also received a good coverage by the local media.
Barmer 28th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at S.N. Vohra Senior Secondary School in Jasol village of Barmer, 100 students from 10 schools of the region participated in the event.
Jodhpur 31st August: The chapter conducted the city round of the heritage quiz at Konark Senior Secondary School. 90 students from 7 schools of the city participated in the event.
Bhilai 12th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Vaishali Nagar. Students from various government schools of Bhilai participated in the competition. Dr. Rajni Nelson Assistant Director of District Education Division expressed her happiness that such an event was being conducted in Bhilai and supported the event.
Mahasamund 17th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz was held Government Boys Model High School. 110 students from 11 schools of the city participated in the event.
Raipur 22nd August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage Quiz at Salem English School. 158 students from 17 schools of the city participated in the event. Shri Suyogya Kumar Mishra, Ex- chief secretary of Chhattisgarh was the chief guest for the event; in his address to the students he encouraged students to explore their family’s heritage.
Mandla 18th August:
The Chapter conducted the city round of the Heritage quiz. The team from Gyandeep English Medium School was declared the winners of the city round
Dhar 19th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz; the event also saw students undertaking a walk of the Dhar fort. The quiz was also well covered by the local media.
Khandwa 26th August: The Chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at St. Jone’s Convent High School. 96 students from various schools of the city participated in the event.
Burhanpur 25th August:
The chapter conducted the city round of the quiz, students from 15 schools participated in the event. The district magistrate Mr. Kaul, felicitated and congratulated the winning teams of the competition.
Jabalpur30th August:
The chapter conducted the city round of the quiz at Rani Durgavati Sangrahalaya. 64 students from 5 schools of the city participated in the event.
The Heritage Education and Communication Division, INTACH conducted a two day teacher training workshop at Nath Valley School, Aurangabad. The workshop was held in collaboration with INTACH Aurangabad Chapter. 30 teachers from 14 schools of the city and the adjoining areas participated in the workshop.
The welcome address of the workshop was shared by Shri Mukund Bhogale, Convener Maharashtra State Chapter; he shared with the participants the 4 main objectives of INTACH stating that awareness, documentation, conservation and heritage activism form the core of the organisation’s work. He also thanked the host school for supporting the workshop.
Shri Ranjit Dass, Principal of the Nath Valley School, welcomed all participants and shared that the school was delighted to host the workshop. He said that Indian heritage is unique, but sadly there is no respect for it. He further added that – our past gives us roots, confidence and pride and hence allows us to showcase ourselves to the word and thus it is necessary to preserve this past.
The session on Aurangabad’s history and heritage was taken up by Shri Ajay Kulkarni, Convener Aurangabad Chapter, his session was extremely informative. The speaker laid out the chronological development of the city, under various rulers, and the importance of Buddhism. He also drew out the parallels between Indian and Japanese cultures, and urged teachers to be proactive as they were the edifice of society and had a very crucial role to play.
The workshop sessions conducted by Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS emphasised on the importance of proactive teachers in instilling a sense of responsibility and sensitivity in the students about India’s composite heritage. The sessions also focused on various components of India’s heritage. Participants were also familiarised with the importance and need of incorporating heritage education as an active part of school curriculum so that children can learn heritage values and imbibe them in their day to day life.
The second day of workshop saw participants undertaking a heritage walk to Naubat Darwaza, Zenana Mahal and Rangeen Darwaza, the walk was led by Mrs. Maya Vaidya, Co –Convener Aurangabad Chapter.
Through the workshop, resource material for instituting heritage clubs in schools was shared with schools, along with suggestions on heritage club activities. The workshop ended with distribution of resource material and certificates to participants.
INTACH HECS, along with INTACH Jalandhar Chapter conducted a one-day teacher training workshop at Army Public School, Beas for teachers from 36 teachers from 18 schools in and around Beas. The workshop began with a brief introduction to INTACH by Maj. Gen. Balwinder Singh, Convener, Jalandhar Chapter. He spoke about the INTACH office in New Delhi and the kind of work that is done here. After this, the first session began. Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS, INTACH spoke to the teachers about their importance in the lives of children. She stressed on the importance of sharing stories and learning from one another, and respecting each other’s heritage. She asked the teachers about an aspect of heritage from their lives that rejuvenates them. Ms. Datt told them about the INTACH logo and its significance, and the founders of the organisation. Then the INTACH film was shown. After the introduction, she gave a presentation elaborating on the different kinds of heritage – natural, living, built, and material with respect to India, with some focus on Beas.
After the presentation, Maj. Gen. Balwinder Singh and Ms. Purnima Datt addressed the students of the school. They told them about the importance of heritage and diversity in our country. In the second session, teachers were shown an artefact and they had to guess what the object was. They then did a role-play between an ancient inkpot and a new-age plastic pen. Finally, the teachers did an activity where they were divided into four groups, and each groups had to highlight one aspect of Beas heritage. They had to develop the objective, lesson plan, activity, and follow up. The teachers explored the heritage in exciting ways.
On the occasion of World Heritage Week, INTACH Lalitpur Chapter together with INTACH Jhansi Chapter organized a range of activities along with the regional Archaeology Department and the Government Museum Jhansi. The various activities were focused on the history, archaeology and cultural aspects of Bundelkhand. They organized cultural programmes, heritage awareness rallies, heritage walk, photography, exhibition painting competition and a two day workshop.
INTACH Palakkad Chapter organized a school heritage meet on 21st October, 2019. The Chapter combined different heritage activity together and conducted it as a sort of 1-day festival. They believe that this combined events would draw greater attention, make the vent more lively and exciting. The event was called Palmyra, the signature feature of Palakkad’s landscape. Flyers and forms were produced as part of an outreach kit. The event was organized at Ahalia Heritage Village, Kozhippara. 14 schools, 308 students and more than 30 teachers participated in the event. The students were welcomed and the day’s programme was introduced by Mr. Arun Narayan, Convenor of INTACH Palakkad Chapter. Experts were invited to the event to brief the students on various things.
Workshop Expert for FILMIT was Mr. Farooq Abdul Rahiman who is a filmmaker and writer from Palakkad. He has made over 20 films (TV and Feature)Winner of Kerala State Film Award 2012 for ‘Kaliyachan’ (Best Director). The sessions focused on the ability to watch films with critical awareness. Screening of the film to understand aspects like shots, angles, light/shade, color, camera placement/ movement, foreground/background, sounds, spaces, stories etc., group discussions and group activity was also carried out to make a film engaging, interesting and meaningful.
Workshop Expert for Discover Living Heritage- Leather puppet making was Mr. Lakshmana Pulavar who is the youngest son of the legendary master Krishnankutty Pulavar. With close to two decades of direct tutelage under his father, he has been part of over 1500 performances with his family. He has led the group in over 2000 performances. The workshop Sessions started with a brilliant presentation on the history and traditions of world puppetry where various kinds of puppets were introduced. Students made simple puppets with paper board and they also got to work on actual leather by making perforations with professional tools, under expert supervision. The students and teachers were also shown s set of scripts, which made them even more excited as most of them were seeing Palmyra manuscripts for the first time. A brilliant demonstration of Tholpavakoothu at the end of the event brought the purpose of the workshop full circle.
Expert for Theatre Workshop was Sreejith Palliyil who is one of our most active members, is an amateur theatre person and folklore enthusiast. He conducted what surely was the activity with the highest energy levels at Palmyra. His workshop on body language in theatre saw even the most tentative of participant soon throw reserve to the winds and have a whale of a time. This workshop focused on practical ways to look, sound and feel more confident to engage an audience. The workshop was a highly interactive session and it helped the students use their voices and body language confidently. The workshop also brought out the importance of making connections which is fundamental for any kind of communication. The participants got to think on their feet, react to situations and work in teams.
Gandhiji at 150- Painting and essay writing competition and India Heritage Quiz 2019 was also conducted where the students had lots of fun with interesting range of topics and great composition of essays and drawings by the students. The winning students were Chinmayi and Sunitha Devi of the Government Moyans Girls Higher Secondary School. There was an overall good response from the participants as well as on the management team.
Celebrating Heritage week and commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji, the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) Division of INTACH organised an essay-writing and poster-making competition for school children on 20 November 2019 at INTACH. It was attended by around 172 enthusiastic students from 43 schools. The Chief Guest for the event was emiment poet, art & literary critic and former civil servant Shri Ashok Vajpeyi.
The programme began with a welcome address by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, HECS).The participants were introduced to INTACH and the Gandhi at 150 National Programme. Thereafter, the new Young INTACH website by HECS was released by the Ho'nble Chief Guest. The websites comprises of interesting activities for students such as Quiz and Games, Worksheets on different aspects of Indian Heritage. It was followed by an introduction and inaugural address by the Chief Guest. During his special address on the occasion of heritage week, a tribute to the legacy of Gandhi ji was emphasized upon. He also spoke about Satyagraha and ways in which Gandhi ji unleashed change through non-violent action. Stressing on the relevance of his philosophy - then and now, he encouraged students to embrace Gandhianism at all levels. The session concluded with a singing of a popular and well-known song associated with Gandhi ji, 'Vaishnav Jan to'. The singing session was kindly facilitated by Mr Ruknuddin Mirza (Assistant Director, Architectural Heritage Division, INTACH) during which all students, teachers, INTACH representatives, including Convenor INTACH Jharkhand Chapter, Mr Ghosh who had also joined in. Thereafter, the competition instructions were shared with the students. Alongside, the students and teachers had an opportunity to participate in a live-charkha spinning session conducted by Mr Balwan Singh , Resource person and representative from the Charkha Gandhi Museum, Khadi & Village Industries Commission. Aspecial edition pamphlet on Gandhi ji developed by HECS, especially on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary was also shared with all.
Gandhi at 150 - An Icon for Change is part of a nation-wide HECS programme aimed at raising the awareness of school children about Mahatma Gandhi ji's legacy and will have students from heritage clubs across the country taking part in the initiative.
Pali Chapter of Indian National trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) organise a historical tour for students of Government Senior Secondary School, Chirpatiya and other adjoining Schools of Marwar junction block in Pali district to well known heritage importance sites. Chapter convener Mr. Karan Singh Chauhan addressed the students about the visit and also about the various programmes the Chapter organizes to promote awareness and knowledge about heritage sites of Pali district. There were about 62 students who participated in the programme. The first visit was at Sonana Khetalaji where the students interacted with the villages and then moved to Muchala Mahavirji Ghanerao where an ancient temple is situated in the root of Arawali Mountain. The students also got to see various types of birds, animals and got to see the tribal life too. The last destination was at the world famous Ranakpur temple near Sadari town. It is an ancient Jain temple that was built in 1500 -1600 AD by Jain devotees of Rishabhdev and Aadinath Trithankars sculpture of Aadianth temple is of great importance. The Ranakpur festival is organized here by the district administration.
INTACH VARANASI CHAPTER collaborated in the Sanskarshala Debate Competition organised by Jagran newspaper. Mr. Ashok Kapoor Convener of INTACH Varanasi Chapter, Nirmal Joshi Addl Co- Convener and Prof Ms. Rashmi Kala Agrawal Life Member were jury members. Last year INTACH VARANASI had conducted the entire story telling sessions under Sanskarshala programme. Artist Daya Shanker conducted a full day workshop explaining Banaras traditional painting at Little Flower house Kakarmatta which is a INTACH Institutional Member. Daya Shanker is one of the artists who made the 3D Mural at Man Mahal Vertual Museum.
In order to make school students aware of the different types of material heritage, and the ways and means to preserve it, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH in collaboration with INTACH Conservation Institute, (ICI) New Delhi organised Care for Heritage Workshop on 22nd and 23rd October, for school students of Delhi - NCR.
Through the workshop the students got hands on opportunity to learn about conservation techniques employed by conservation experts to preserve different kinds of material heritage. The focus of this workshop was on conservation of objects made of paper. 109 students from 27 schools were part of this workshop, across 2 days.
The workshop session opened with, Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director HECS, welcoming the students. She introduced INTACH to students and its role as India’s premier organization for conservation of its heritage. Dr. Padma Rohilla, Director of ICI, New Delhi interacted with the students. Her session focused on art conservation and its importance. She discussed with the students the factors of damage for different kinds of material heritage. She further added that the merit of restoration work also lies in the fact that it is reversible and does not alter the original character of the object.
The workshop session was divided into three parts, namely – photograph hinging, tear mending of paper and the visit to the ICI lab. The students were divided up into various groups to carry out these activities. These sessions were led by Mr. Nagamurthy, representative of ICI, New Delhi along and other team members. The visit to the lab, allowed students to view different types of objects undergoing conservation and understand the process of conservation used for different kinds of material heritage.
The concluding remarks for this workshop were shared by Ms. Datt, she asked the participating students to share with their friends and teachers, their learning from the workshop. She then called upon the Chairman, INTACH Shri LK Gupta and Ex- Chapter Division Head, Shri Rahul Pathak to felicitate the students and teachers who were part of this workshop. Shri Gupta was highly appreciative of the efforts of ICI, New Delhi and congratulated the students on learning the basics of conservation. Ms. Padma Rohilla, Director ICI also thanked the students and encouraged students to take up conservation as a profession, and provided vital information on institutions offering such courses in India.
The workshop ended with the distribution of certificates and a commemorative group photograph.
The Chapter along with Sarvodaya International Trust, Telangana & Andhra, Chapter Kakinada, and Gandhi Bhavan, Kakinada celebrated the 150th Birth Celebrations of Jathipitha Mahatma Gandhi in a befitting manner. Commencing with a Peace March, which was flagged off by the City Mayor, Smt. Sunkara Paavani, starting from Gandhinagar Park after offering floral tributes to the Mahatma, the rally was participated by more than 150 prominent citizens of Kakinada. The students walked through the streets, Vivekananda Park and Main Road to Gandhi Bhavan, a distance of 2 kms., where breakfast was served to all. Gandhiji’s favourite bhajans, “Raghupathirajaram” and “Vaishnavo janato” were sung by all near the Gandhi Statue in the Gandhi Bhavan. Later saplings were planted in the premises. Competitions in singing patriotic songs, Elocution and Essay Writing were also held in 60 Schools. Certificates and Prizes of Books on Mahatma Gandhi were awarded to the Winners in the Gandhi Bhavan. Sri H. V. K. Ranga Rao, a prominent writer of Books on Gandhiji presented his latest Books to the Gandhi Bhavan.’s Library and spoke at length on the life of Mahatma. Sri D. V. N. Sarma of Gandhi Bhavan, Sri Vakkalanka Ramakrishna, Co-Convener, East Godavari Chapter, Sri Y. S. V. S. Murthy, Sri Surendra Raju, Dr. R. V. Ramana Rao, Smt Nookla Bhanumathi, Branch Secretary, AIWC, Dr. M. V. Bharathalakshmi, Prof. Dosgiri Rao, Prof. Ravi Shankar of EGREE Foundation, Members of INTACH, Lawyers, Doctors and others participated in the Walk and the meeting.
On the occasion of the 150th Gandhiji jayanti, INTACH Mahoba Chapter organized a cleanliness drive. Students were invited for the occasion where they cleaned the area around the monument. The students enthusiastically participated in the cleanliness drive.
A Heritage Walk was conducted for the students of Hindi City High School, City Kanya Vidyalaya and City Higher Secondary School, Chandrapur under the aegis of INTACH Chandrapur Chapter on account of the World Tourism Day. As many as 50 students participated in the Heritage Walk. The students visited the Murlidhar Temple belonging to the Bhonsala Dynasty and were acquainted with the glorious history of Bhonsala Dynasty and the architectural features of the Murlidhar Temple.
The 12th Foundation Day of INTACH, Chandrapur Chapter was celebrated enthusiastically by conducting a Heritage Walk for the NCC cadets of City Higher Secondary School to the historic Grave Yard premises belonging to the Gond Dynasty. A cleanliness drive in the premises, an Exhibition of the miniatures, postal stamps, coins, currency notes, and rare photographs of Mahatma Gandhi from the collection of Shri Ashok Singh Thakur, Convener of Chandrapur Chapter was also held at the Grave Yard premises belonging to the Gond Dynasty on account of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
INTACH Jamnagar Chapter celebrated the Forest week with a painting competition at Khijadia bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary has a lot of migratory birds that arrives after monsoon. World Forest week is just as important as any environmental issues. A total of 35 people participated in the competition. The institution member of INTACH, Taheri School is part of this innitiative. A total of 16 students from Taheri School also participated. The participants were invited by the Jamnagar forest department to paint murals on the bare walls of the Khijadia bird sanctuary.
The INTACH Malerkotla Punjab oragnised a programme for installation of Heritage Club at the Government Primary School, Maholi Khurd, District Sangrur, Punjab. Young enthusiastic heritage club members were briefed about their heritage and how to take care of their heritage. They were also given passports and badges. A heritage mela or exhibition is also planned in the last week of October 2019.
Our Chapter member Mr. Gurvinder Singh has taken the initiative to setup a Heritage Club in Globe International School, Sangipur, Yamunanagar District (25 km away from Yamunanagar). He gave an introductory presentation and handed over HECS material and related books to the school. The school management and Principal are very enthusiastic to get involved in INTACH - HECS activities. A detailed presentation of INTACH as well as HECS division was presented to the participants.
On the occasion of World Photography Day a Photography Workshop was organized under the Creative Workshop Programmes of HECS Division by INTACH Varanasi Chapter. The workshop was held on August 20th at Little Flower House, Kakarmatta which is INTACH Institutional member. The workshop was conducted by Shri Binay Rawal, a Life Member INTACH and nationally renowned photo artists who has conducted three workshops for INTACH in different member schools. He explained the techniques of photography and also showed some remarkable photos of his own which have won awards at different forums in India. The school announced that students will take photos in next 10 days and best three of those photos will get awards.
Photography Workshop
The INTACH Filmit workshop in Kochi was conducted on 18th September at Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara. Around 125 students and 20 teachers from 14 schools participated. A formal introduction to the workshop was given by Abhishek Das from HECS. He welcomed everyone to the workshop and gave a brief introduction of the project and its milestones. Mr. Babu C Rajeev, Convenor, INTACH Kochi Chapter also spoke to them and congratulated them for their previous year’s efforts. This was followed by the screening of a short film on heritage made by the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) division.
After, the screening, Abhishek asked the students what heritage meant to them and how they related to it. After this short exercise, a presentation on the themes for the current year was discussed. Different ideas related to themes and how to make a film on the given themes were also discussed.
Mr. Vinod Sreedhar and Ms. Neha Kandalgaokar, the technical resource people took the next session. Vinod started off with a short exercise wherein the students were asked to get up from their seats and strike their favourite directorial pose. This was done as an ice breaker activity. He then showed a film on textile dyeing which did not have any dialogues.
Through a powerpoint presentation, Vinod explained different shots and angles. He showed various shots and angles and asked them what they were. They were – long shot, mid shot, close up and point of view shots. He also discussed key areas such as eye level, low angle, side angle, front angle and top angle to bring out the depth of the film.
The sound recording on camera was demonstrated in relation to the distance from the microphone. He suggested that it is better to use a collar microphone (external microphone) instead of the camera microphone especially while shooting outdoors. Another recording was shown to the students where an interview was conducted with the camera being kept at different places.
The editing session was done next. Vinod and Neha stressed on the importance of paper editing and creating a log sheet before actually editing the video on editing software. The windows movie maker software was demonstrated to the students.
Before the break, the students were asked to shoot a film, in a sequence so that they could be compiled into a movie. Also, tips on how to hold a camera/camcorder and some basic tips on recording were also given.
Different features of Windows Movie Maker were also discussed through a pre recorded clip shot by the resource persons. Features like, title, credits, subtitles, shot transitions, adding audio video files, etc. were explained.
In the concluding part of the session, all doubts were discussed. The vice principal of the host school addressed the students and exclaimed her happiness about the project coming to Kochi. She congratulated the schools for their efforts. The students were then addressed by Mr. K J Sohan, Kerala State Convenor. He thanked the resource persons for doing a great session and also thanked the schools for attending. He also thanked the host school hosting the workshop. The workshop ended with the distribution of last year’s DVD to the participating schools.
The Teacher Training Workshop organised by INTACH Gwalior Chapter in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) was held on 3 and 4 September 2019 at the Delhi Public World School in Gwalior. It was attended by 33 teachers from 15 schools from across the city. The workshop began with a welcome address by Dr Kamakshi Maheshwari (INTACH Governing Council Member and INTACH Gwalior representative). It was followed by a welcome address by Ms Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS representative).
An introduction to INTACH and an overview of its activities was shared by Ms Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS representative). Thereafter, an Understanding of Heritage and its various dimensions was presented. It was followed by an orientation on HECS programmes and a detailed presentation on Heritage Education in Classrooms. Stress was laid on establishing Heritage Clubs and involving school students.
Highlight of the second day was a site visit to the Moti Mahal conducted by Dr H. B. Maheshwari Jaisal (Convenor, INTACH Madhya Pradesh State Chapter). The restoration work undertaken by INTACH was described too. In the next session, the INTACH publications and website was presented by Ms Shivaa Rawat. In the final session, group presentations were made by participants. The efforts of the participants and their enthusiasm to establish heritage clubs was appreciated by Mr Vikas Singh (Convenor, INTACH Gwalior).

The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) of INTACH in collaboration with INTACH Mangalore Chapter oraganised a One-day Teacher Training Workshop on 3rd of Semptember 2019 at Mangalore INTACH office, Mangalore. It was attended by 4 teachers from 4 schools. The workshop was also attended by Mr. Subhas Chandra Basu, Convenor of Mangalore Chapter and Ms. Caroline D’Souza, member of INTACH. The session by resource person was enriching and informative. Ms Purnima Datt [Principal Director, HECS] shared a welcome note and introduced heritage through a presentation on India’s heritage, going through the various types of heritage of India. The INTACH Film was also shown to the participants. Mr. Subhas Chandra Basu, Convenor of Mangalore Chapter gave a short talk to the participants. He spoke to them about INTACH Mangalore Chapter and the works the Chapter has done regarding the craft workshop and the quiz competition for school children. The works and activity were targeted to reach younger minds and help them to counter the forces and strengthen them. He encouraged the participants to be rooted to move forward and become leaders and followers for tomorrow. He also said that one should have quality work with good participation in future. The resource person for the workshop, Prof Thukaram Poojary discussed about the rich culture of the Tulu history. He stressed on how one should understand the value of one’s rich culture and that it is sad to see many people having lack of knowledge and try our best to understand one’s heritage. He encouraged the participants to be heritage enthusiast and understand the rich heritage around them. The workshop included, group presentations by participants on using varied narratives to enable students to engage with heritage more creatively and short sharing by the students about the workshop. The workshop concluded with distribution of certificates along with the workshop resource materials.

The INTACH Jamnagar Chapter in collaboration with the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation organized a mural painting activity in the city. Invitations were sent to institutional Member schools to participate and Taheri English Medium School delightedly carried out the murals in JMC’s designated areas as follows:
On 16th June 2019 Mural paintings memento felicitation ceremony was organized by Jan Jagruti Abhiyan Samiti and INTACH Jamnagar Chapter at kuvarbhai Dharamshala Nr Army Head quarters. There were many distinguished guests present. A total of 86 participants took part and mementos were given by Jan Jagruti Abhiyan and INTACH Jamnagar Chapter gave out certificates to all the participants. The Gujarati Daily Divyabhaskar covered the event in their newspaper on 18th June 2019. Jamnagar Mahanagar Palika (Jamnagar Municipal Corporation) will make this a regular feature to beautify the blank walls and INTACH Jamnagar Chapter will participate jointly with the school students. For the past few months, INTACH Jamnagar Chapter has been busy assisting JMC (Jamnagar Municipal Corporation) in their massive drive to do Mural (wall paintings) in all empty government walls around Jamnagar with different themes.
The College Heritage Volunteer Workshop organized by INTACH Assam State Chapter in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) and the Department of Archaeology, Cotton University was held on 23 August 2019. It was attended by over 90 participants comprising of college students, research scholars and faculty members from various colleges.The programme began with a welcome address by Dr Manjil Hazarika (Cotton University). It was followed by a welcome address by Dr Sheila Bora (Conveor, INTACH Assam State Chapter) and thereafter, an inaugural address by Prof. Diganta Kumar Das (Registrar, Cotton University).The session concluded with an introduction to INTACH and the College Heritage Volunteer Programme by Ms Shivaa Rawat (National Coordinator, HECS) and a vote of thanks by Dr Manjil Hazarika (Cotton University).
The next segment comprising of talks and presentations by resource persons was informative and interesting. Mr Swapnanil Barua, IAS (Retd.) [Co-Convenor, INTACH, Assam State Chapter] spoke about Youth and Heritage Awareness; Mr Ajoy Kumar Dutta [Padma Shri Awardee] highlighted the Heritage of Assam; Dr Shiela Bora [Convenor, INTACH, Assam State Chapter] presented the INTACH Restoration Project on Majuli Island (Dakshinpat Satra); Mr Arijit Choudhury [Architect] described the Architectural Heritage of Guwahati. It was followed by a presentation on Heritage - an understanding and overview and a detailed overview of the INTACH’s College Heritage Volunteer programme and ways to contribute. Thereafter, an exhibition of unique heritage objects from Assam was organised within the college premises by Dr Manzil Hazarika. In an informative guided tour, Dr Hazarika offered a kaleideoscopic view of each exhibit and artifact, ranging from pre-history, mesolithic, neolithic and medieval period. Including, pottery artefacts found in the Cotton University campus too. It was followed by group work and presentation by participants on the various aspects of their heritage. The workshop concluded with a heritage site visit across the cotton college principal quarter, dighali pukhuri, kachari, visnu janardan rock cut archaeological site facing Brahmaputra.

The Heritage Education and Communication Service Division of INTACH (HECS) organised the Filmit India workshop along with INTACH Goa Chapter at Sharda Mandir School on 23rd August 2019. Students and Teachers from 12 schools were part of the workshop.
The programme began with a prayer recited by the Sharda Mandir School students followed by the welcome address by Ms.Fatima Gracias (Convenor INTACH Goa Chapter). Mr.Ian Alvares (Co- Convenor INTACH Goa Chapter) provided few words of encouragement to the students.
The brainstorming session was conducted by Ms.Purnima Datt (Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service Division, INTACH). She introduced HECS division and its activities and also the Filmit project. In this session themes for this year’s films were also discussed. Ms.Datt asked students to share about any one personal heritage item which is over fifty years old. Students share about an old One Rupee note, a cupboard from the 1930s, painting of their Grandmother made in 1936.
Students showed much enthusiasm about making films on forts like Chapora Fort, Reis Magos and Aguada fort as well as on the study of smaller churches of Goa. Students expressed their interest in making films about childhood heritage. Games like Laghori, Ludo etc. were discussed while some students also sang lullabies and wished to make films on these topics. Another topic which received an enthusiastic response of traditional cuisine students came up with ideas about traditional food and recipes of the Goon cuisine.
The second session of the Workshop focused on the technical aspects of filmmaking and was conducted by Mr. Vinod Sreedhar and Ms. Neha Kandalgaokar. Mr.Vinod spoke about the various stages of filmmaking. The importance of sounds and reduction of background noise was discussed. A short filmmaking activity was done after which Mr.Vinod discussed about the mistakes made. It was discussed that many times children start laughing during the filming and to prevent it a laughing exercise should be done. Space constraints, teamwork, and planning were highlighted as major challenges during filmmaking. Ms.Neha spoke about the importance of editing. She said that editing is an important part of film making and it is what makes a film. She taught the students about editing films on Windows movie maker and adding various effects.
The programme concluded on a positive note with the distribution of Filmit DVD's.
The INTACH Filmit workshop in Hyderabad was conducted on 14th August at Jubilee Hills Public School. Around 110 students and 18 teachers from 13 schools participated. The proceedings began with a dance performance by the students of the host school. The formal introduction was given by a student of the school. This was followed by the screening of a short film on heritage made by the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) division.
Abhishek Das, from HECS Delhi gave a brief introduction about the Filmit India the project and its milestones. He then asked the students what heritage meant to them and how they related to it. After this short exercise, a presentation on the themes for the current year was discussed.
Mr. Vinod Sreedhar and Ms. Neha Kandalgaokar, the technical resource people took the next session. Vinod started off with a short exercise wherein the students were asked to get up from their seats and strike their favourite directorial pose. This was done as an ice breaker activity. He then showed a film on textile dyeing which did not have any dialogues.
Through a power point presentation, Vinod explained different shots and angles. He showed various shots and angles and asked them what they were. They were – long shot, mid shot, close up and point of view shots. He also discussed key areas such as eye level, low angle, side angle, front angle and top angle to bring out the depth of the film.
The sound recording on camera was demonstrated in relation to the distance on the microphone. He suggested that it is better to use a collar microphone (external mic) instead of the camera microphone especially while shooting outdoors. Another recording was shown to the students where an interview was conducted with the camera being kept at different places. This was done to further explain the importance of sound so that students also follow these techniques. Before the break, the students were asked to shoot a film, in a sequence so that they could be compiled into a movie. Also, tips on how to hold a camera/camcorder and some basic tips on recording were also given.
After the break, the editing session began. He stressed on the importance of paper editing and creating a log sheet before actually editing the video on editing software. A demonstration of the editing software, Windows Movie Maker was also given.
One film from last year, El Cambio, made by the students of Radcliffe School, Kochi was screened. In the concluding part of the session, all doubts were discussed. Students asked various questions related editing of a film and what softwares can be used apart from Windows Movie Maker.
The students were then addressed by Ms. Anuradha Reddy, Convenor INTACH Hyderabad Chapter. She thanked the resource persons for doing a great session and also thanked the schools for attending. She also thanked the host school hosting the workshop. The workshop ended with the distribution of last year’s DVD to the participating schools. Before dispersal, everyone gathered together for a group photograph outside the auditorium.
The INTACH Filmit workshop in Chennai was conducted on 13th August at Sri Sankara Sr. Secondary School, Adyar. Around 70 students and 13 teachers from 10 schools participated. INTACH Nagpur Chapter in association with Architectural Sankul, formally inaugurated Heritage Club on 9th August 2019, at St. Ursula Girls' High School, Nagpur A formal function was organized where Dr. Madhura Rathod and Ar. Nitika Ramani from INTACH Nagpur Chapter & Architectural Sankul were guest of honour. Ar. Nitika Ramani and Principal Ms. Rachana Singh addressed the students. The heritage passport and badgets were distributed to the students. It was the effort of Principal Ms. Rachana Singh and teachers Ms. Rachana Anand and Shilpa Patil along with the History Department that the Heritage club was established. This is a small initiation from INTACH Nagpur Chapter in association with Architectural Sankul and the Chapter hopes to associate many schools to contribute towards spreading heritage awareness.
The Film it Project aims at engaging middle school children, in a film making project that requires students to make short films on different aspects of India’s heritage. These films are conceptualised and shot by children. The participating students thus attend a workshop that is conducted by Heritage Education and Communication Service, (HECS) INTACH. The workshop has two parts to it, the first is the content workshop and the second is the technical workshop.
The Filmit Mumbai Workshop was organized by Heritage Education and Communication Service in collaboration with INTACH Greater Mumbai Chapter on 8 August 2019 at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum. It was attended by 63 students and 15 teachers from 10 schools, of the city.
The students and teachers were welcomed by INTACH Mumbai Chapter; this was followed by the screening of the HECS film, showcasing the initiatives and activities of HECS.
This was followed by a brief introduction to INTACH and its activities, by Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, emphasizing on the importance of heritage education and awareness for school students. Post this, an interactive session was initiated by the speaker and students were asked – What in their view was heritage? Some very interesting responses were given by the audience; children shared how they have kept a copy of his grandparents’ ration card, the equipments from a morse code device, coins and stamps etc.
This interactive session opened discussion for the themes current year, students shared their suggestion on topics they would like to make films on such as the Mithi River, Eco – friendly ways of Ganpati Visarjan, Lakes in Thane, Food heritage of Mumbai – Vadapav, Mani Bhavan etc. These were few of the suggestions given by students for making films this year.
The technical session of the workshop was conducted by Mr. Vinod Sreedhar and Ms. Neha Kandalgaokar, resource persons from the Tuning Fork Films, Mr. Vinod started the session asking students to freeze themselves in their favorite shooting pose. This exercise helped the students refresh themselves and prepare for the engaging and informative technical session.
The session focused on the 3 major aspects of film making namely – planning, shooting and editing. The speaker asked the students - why are films so powerful? The students responded saying films allow one to express our minds and enable us to see things and provide a somewhat tangible expression of an idea or concept. Films also have a strong potential for communicating an idea or an emotion as visuals are appealing to the audience.
The speaker, discussed the importance of shots and angles and their use as well as relevance in film making, post the refreshment break a session on editing was conducted which focused on the use of editing software, especially Windows movie maker and its various features, essential for short film making.
Concluding his remarks on editing, He then briefed the students about four clear steps of editing as follows- assembly, adding text and music, managing brightness and contrast, audio levels, effects and transitions and exporting with recommended settings. The technical session also saw a lot of queries from students and hence was very engaging and interactive.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks and a commemorative group photograph.

The welcome address was given by Principal, St Stephen’s School, Mr Louis Lopez. He welcomed all participants to the school and spoke of the richness of Indian culture, he stressed on the significance of valuing it and recognising the role it played in development.
The students were then addressed by Mr VK Kapoor, the speaker welcomed the students and expressed his gratitude towards the school and the staff for organising the workshop. In his address to the students, he stressed that students should work hard, and improves quality in every aspect of their life.
This was followed by a presentation on the themes of this year, prior to the themes certain guidelines were also shared by Ms Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS, Representative). She encouraged the students to showcase various facets of Chandigarh’s heritage, ranging from forts, palaces, crafts, cuisines, traditional dresses and more through their films. She thanked all the schools for being a part of the workshop and appreciated the school teachers for supporting the Filmit endeavour.

The Heritage Education and Communication Service Division in collaboration with the Speaking Tiger Publishing organized a Story-Telling workshop and the release of book series Off we go! To... based on Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata on 6th August 2019. The workshop was attended by 90 students and 9 teachers from 9 schools.
The workshop began with the screening of the HECS film followed by welcome address by Ms.Purnima Datt, Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service. Ms.Datt thanked the authors Ms. Arthy and Ms. Mamta for their efforts. Ms.Datt also spoke about Heritage and its various kinds. She informed students about INTACH and its role in preservation and conservation of heritage.
Ms. Radhika (Editor, Speaking Tiger Publication) shared her experience on working on the books. She spoke about how the young protagonists of the book were designed keeping in mind the young readers.
Ms.Arthy Muthanna Singh and Ms. Mamta Nainy spoke about the importance of knowing their cities inside out and shared interesting anecdotes. It was an interactive session where students also shared their experiences.
A quiz was conducted by Mr.Abhishek Das (Senior Programme Coordinator, HECS,INTACH) based on the cities of Delhi,Mumbai,Kolkata. Students received HECS Publications as prizes.
This was followed by the release of Speaking Tiger Publishing and INTACH HECS joint publications named Off we go! To Delhi, to Delhi, Off we go! To Mumbai, to Mumbai,Off we go! To Kolkata, to Kolkata by Maj.Gen. (Retd.) L.K.Gupta (Chairman,INTACH) , Ms. Renuka Chatterjee (Vice President,Speaking Tiger Publishing) and Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS, INTACH.
The storytelling workshop was conducted by Ms. Paro Anand , renowned author and winner of Bal Sahitya Puruskar. Ms. Anand began with an introduction to the publications and followed with interesting stories about each city. Discussions on the city of Mumbai led to rap song challenge in which students took part enthusiastically. As a group activity all participants shared keywords about Mumbai and a rap song was made:

Ms. Anand encouraged students to compose poems/songs about their cities and individual presentations were made. The workshop culminated with distribution of participation certificates and a set of three books.
The INTACH Filmit workshop in Kolkata was conducted on 2nd August at The Heritage School, Kolkata. Over 120 participants from 16 schools in Kolkata participated. Mr. Shankar Subramaniyam, teacher from the host school welcomed everybody to the workshop. This was followed by the screening of a short film on heritage made by the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) division.
Abhishek Das, from HECS Delhi gave a brief introduction of the project and its milestones and a presentation was given on the themes for the current year along with a small brainstorming session was done.
The technical workshop commenced shortly after this. Mr. Ankit Pogula addressed the students on one of the films screened from last year, made by students of Radcliffe School. Sharing his thoughts on the film he added that the film was a good example of how to show past, present and future in a film.
He also elaborated on the about three important stages of film-making, which are, preparing, shooting, editing. The session also focused on familiarizing the students with the different filming angles when using a camera. He explained how different angles portray different meanings in a film. For instance, to detail a character or put a perspective, a close-up angle suits better.
He explained everything through example screenings assisted by Mr. Aditya Verma. The sound recording on camera was demonstrated in relation to the distance on the microphone. This was followed by a screening of a short film called Bridgeman of India.
He then explained the editing of films, starting out with asking students what are good editing habits? He highlighted the importance of organization, especially music, videos, and photographs in one folder. A demonstration of the editing software, windows movie maker was also given.
After this, the students were given a short refreshment break where each school was given the task of making a short 1-2 min film without any editing or retakes.
After the break ended, the students’ experiences were discussed and the difficulties they faced while shooting. Ankit did a Q&A with the students to help them clear all doubts.
The workshop ended with a vote of thanks by Abhishek and the distribution of last year’s DVD to the participating schools.
The Filmit Workshop organised by INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) in collaboration with INTACH Jaipur Chapter was held on 2nd August, 2019 at Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ Public School (MGDS) in Jaipur. It was attended by 95 students and 18 teachers from 11 schools. The workshop was inaugurated with a welcome address by Ms. Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS representative). She encouraged the participants to engage with various aspects of Jaipur City's Heritage which was this year declared a UNESCO World Heritage City too. She encouraged the students to showcase various facets of its heritage, ranging from forts, palaces, crafts, cuisines, traditional dresses and more. She thanked all the schools for being a part of the workshop and appreciated the school teachers for supporting the Filmit endeavour. In addition to, welcoming the two new schools Jayshree Periwal International School and Jayshree Periwal Global School to the Filmit India Family and wished them luck. This was followed by an introduction to the Filmit Technical Resource Persons, Ms. Pulkita Parsai and Ms. Sanjana Chopra (Tuning Fork Films) by Ms. Christina Shangne (INTACH HECS representative).
A presentation and discussion of the current year’s themes was presented by Ms. Shivaa Rawat, INTACH, HECS. Various ideas were exchanged and topics were discussed in the form of a brainstorming session with the students. Pointers for making a good film were also discussed.
The resource persons, Ms. Pulkita Parsai and Ms. Sanjana Chopra from Tuning Fork Films then took over the technical session. A film made by one of the Filmit School from Kochi was shown to the participants. The students were then asked about what they liked about the film and what technical things one can observe in the film. The students were given tips on how to make a good film. The resource persons also showed different presentations and discussed on the three main aspects of film making– preparation, shooting and editing. Different types of shots and angles were discussed. Examples with short videos were shown to help the students understand about sound effects, camera angles and clarity of the film through proper handling of the camera. A short film on ‘Weaves of Magic’ was screened. The students were then asked to notice the number of shots, different camera angles and how sometimes the lighting can also create as a silhouette and can be taken as an advantage in film making. The students took keen interest in observing the film and shared what they like about the film. Some students liked the concept behind the making of the film, others likes the way the subject was captured, the music and flow of the film. The technicalities involved in working with the software ‘Windows Movie Maker’ was explained to the students. They were shown how to work on a storyboard/timeline, add music, adjust volumes, add narration and animations, etc. The students’ queries regarding all editing issues were answered during this session. During the half hour break, the students were asked to make a short 1-2 minutes film comprising of at least 8-10 shots. The films made by the students were then screened. They were asked to share their experience, the difficulties faced and how it can be improved. Constructive criticisms regarding each film were shared by all. Great enthusiasm was shown by the students. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks and a commemorative group photograph.

The workshop commenced with the lighting of the lamp ceremony done by the resource persons – Mr. Ankit Pogula, Mr. Aditya Verma and Mr. Abhishek Das and the Varanasi chapter Convenor Mr. Ashok Kapoor and Co-convenor Mr. Nirmal Joshi. The host school welcomed everybody to the workshop and the resource people were introduced and felicitated. The principal of Sunbeam Varuna again welcomed everyone to the programme and expressed her happiness in being a part of the project.

It was attended by 7 schools, represented by around 94 students and 9 teachers from the city. The workshop was inaugurated with a welcome address by Mr Pavan A Bakeri (Co-Convenor, INTACH Ahmedabad). The Filmit Content and Themes were explained by Ms Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS representative) and the Filmit Technical Ascpects were described by Ms Pulkita Parsai (Tuning Fork Films) supported by her associate, Ms Sanjana Chopra.
In a detailed session, the Filmit Project in India with the themes for 2019-20 was described by Ms Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS representative). The interactive session offered a platform to think about ways to make a film engaging, interesting and meaningful. The session on technical aspects of film-making was taken by Ms Pulkita Parsai (Tuning Fork Films).She encouraged the students to understand the building blocks of film-making and the technicalities involved. The students expressed enthusiasm to capture good footage for their heritage films.The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks and a commemorative group photograph.
The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) Division of INTACH in collaboration with the INTACH Vadodara Chapter organized the Filmit Workshop in Navrachana School on 1st August 2019. This is the twelfth year of the Filmit Project wherein three new cities Vadodara, Palakkad and Port Blair have been introduced to the project. The workshop was attended by 72 students and 19 teachers from 8 schools. Theworkshop consisted of two parts- content and technical.
The program started with a welcome address by the Navrachana School students. The students presented a song about rivers and their importance followed by a skit on a talking monument. This was followed by a brief introduction by Mr. Sanjeev Joshi (Convenor,INTACH Vadodara Chapter) to INTACH and its role in protecting and conserving heritage. This was followed by the screening of HECS film.
Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH took the following session where she introduced HECS division and its activities and also the Filmit project. In this session themes for this year’s films were also discussed. Students also expressed their interest in making films about the disappearing rivers of Gujarat. Mr.Joshi also shared about numerous heritage structures of Vadodara with unique features like mazes, unique windows etc.
This session was followed by the technical session by Ms. Pulkita and Ms. Sanjana from Tuning Fork Films. The session began with the screening of Filmit films - El Cambio by Radcliffe School, Kochi and My Chikoo tree by Regina Mundi High School Goa. Both films were appreciated for their powerful messages. The students were asked to close their eyes and hear the sounds surrounding them to make them understand about the importance of sound in films. A short film was also shown. Students were told about the editing of films as well. The process of editing involves selecting best shots, putting them in sequence, creating a storyline etc.
The workshop concluded on a positive note with distribution of Filmit 2018-19 Best film DVD’s and a commemorative group photograph.
As part of Heritage Awareness programme for school students, INTACH VARANASI organized heritage walk for students of Sant Atulanand Residential Academy school students, where they visited historical and heritage site- Kardmeshwar Temple Complex. Kardmeshwar Temple is 12th century last surviving temple of Kashi and a protected monument of U P State Archaeological Dept. Dr. Sujit Choubey, a historian and expert briefed the students. Kardmeshwar Temple area is the first night halt of famous Panchkoshi Yatra of Kashi. Students were explained about the importance of Yatra as well as history of the temple."
As part of heritage awareness programme for school students and at the same time to highlight the thematic development of road project undertaken by INTACH Delhi with support from Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India, INTACH Varanasi Chapter organised walk through that road. Students of Sunbeam School, Annapurna Nagar (INTACH Institutional member) participated in the walk. 40 students and five teachers from the school, Convener Varanasi Mr. Ashok Kapoor and two INTACH officials based at Varanasi participated. The students listened to the theme as explained by Mr. Somil of INTACH. They were very enthusiastic inspite of extreme hot weather. Later some snacks and cold drink was served to participants. One member Mrs. Bhavana Pandya who resides in that area opened the room for students to sit and enjoy the treat. It is suggested that more such walks should be arranged on all the roads developed by INTACH under leadership of Mrs. Vijaya and Dharmendra Mishra assisted by their local team. Chapter can play active role in this effort. Citizens then will be encouraged to save the art work and ensure its maintenance.
The INTACH Varanasi Chapter Convener Mr. Ashok Kapoor , Mr. Nirmal Joshi, Addl Co Convener and also Dr. Nagendra Pathak, Media Advisor visited Sunbeam School, Moghulserai to present award to Ms. Akanksha, Regional Winner of PAANI KI KAHAANI Painting Competition based on Water Heritage. Certificates were distributed to other participants too. The School is INTACH Institutional Member.
Creating awareness among the Younger generation is the need of the hour. Hence Thanjavur INTACH Chapter conducted a Heritage walk for School and College Students. Heritage club Students and Staff members from four Educational Institutions were invited to take part in the Heritage walk. About 130 Students and life members of INTACH Thanjavur Chapter assembled in Thanjavur Palace Complex on 30th June, 2019. Dr. Uma Maheshwari, Principal Government Music College, Thiruvaiyaru, Sang the Prayer Song Mr. K. Swaminathan, Vice Principal Little Scholars Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, and also Heritage club coordinator for Thanjavur Chapter, the promoter of this programe introduced the Chief Guest, Guests and Guests of Honour to the gathering. Shri Babaji Raja Bhonsele, Senior Prince of Thanjavur, Convenor. INTACH Chapter explained the purpose of the Heritage walk and gave a warm Welcome note. He also shortly explained the aim and motto of INTACH and their remarkable service in recapturing our past History and Heritage throughout our Nation, with a special mention to Thanjavur Chapter. Newly enrolled Life members in INTACH family were felicitated. Dr. Uma Maheshwari, Principal, Govt. Music College, Thiruvaiyaru, Spoke on, “Thanjavur as a seat of music”. The resource person Mr. N. Selvaraj, retired from Educational Service, Life member of Thanjavur INTACH Chapter, Historian, Archaeologist and the President Chola Historical Research Centre, has conducted a lot of Heritage walk to School Children and Senior Citizens in and around Thanjavur, in his talk recollected the memories of Thanjavur rulers, the Cholas, The Nayaks, and the Marattas. He explained now History is not a mere story, and how it has been preserving and protecting mankind’s tradition, heritage and cultural values. Dr. Sankara Narayanan (Life Time Member) Dean, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College, Perambalur waved the green flag and the Heritage walk began amidst the loud clap and cheers of the participants. The very first monuments explained by the resource person Mr. N. Selvaraj were Thanjavur Nayacks Period, Indra Mandhir (Arsonel Tower) Bell Tower and Sangeetha Mahal. All were wondered and thrilled when they were shown the remains of Chola’s palace near Art Gallery.
The Participants also visited World famous Maharaja Serfoji Saraswathi Mahal Library. This is the life time achievement of Serfoji Maharaj II. Resource Person Mr. N. Selvaraj revealed the History of Maratta Dynasty, their dedicated service to the mankind, Chatrams to the Rameshwaram Piligrims. Then they visited the adjoining Maratta Durbal Hall, The Shir Mahal. All were surprised at the Architectural beauty of the 300 years old prestigious hall where 13 Maratti kings conducted the court, the Durbar and the Navabs of Arcot and residents and collectors of East India Company had taken their seats. Here the participants had a thrilling experience. Heritage lovers felt sorry, to see the present condition of the Royal Tank, Krishna Vilasa Kulam. The participants enjoyed their walk through the streets of Royal City, and reached the land mark of Thanjavur, the cannon of Thanjavur. The ASI Monument is mounted on 25 meters high. Resource Person Mr. N. Selvaraj explained the Historical Background of the 400 years old cannon. The cannon once protected the Fort, later turned to inform the time to the citizens in and around the fort. Hence it is called “Dass Medu”, in Maratti “Dass” means time. The participants were advised to take keen interest his history and should come forward to join their hands with INTACH, in preserving and protecting our Heritage through Conservation. INTACH Jammu Chapter in collaboration with department of environmental sciences (E.V.S) University Of Jammu, Jammu Municipal Cooperation and Jammu Development Authority organized an awareness meet on the theme “Beat Air Pollution” on 7th June 2019, as a part of World Environment Day Celebrations. The awareness meet was organized in the Conference Hall of Department of Environmental Sciences, University Of Jammu. The aim of the awareness meet was to sensitize supervisors, sanitary inspectors and other staff members of JMC, JDA and University Of Jammu regarding burning of solid wastes, which causes air pollution. Prof. Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest where as Shri Vikas Sharma, KAS, Vice Chairman Jammu Development Authority, was the Guest of Honour. More than 100 participants which includes supervisory staff of JMC/JDA/University of Jammu, Research Scholars, Students, Officers, Faculty Members, Press and Media Persons and Members of INTACH Jammu Chapter were present in the interactive meet.
The Chief Guest highlighted the role of every individual for controlling air pollution. Expressing concern on increasing air pollution he said that the time has come for concrete action to be put in place by all the citizens, in their individual capacity besides other concerned agencies rather than just holding discussions through seminars and workshops. He exhorted upon all to protect environment for healthy life and to save natural heritage for future generations. Prof. Dhar said that it is the responsibility of every individual to contribute in protecting environment by planting at least one plant by each and every soul. He further emphasized that there should be no burning of any kind of solid wastes which is very harmful and causes air pollution. Shri Vikas Sharma, Vice Chairman JDA, who was the guest of honour, in his remarks appreciated the aim of the awareness meet and further suggested that such awareness programmes should be carried out at school level also to inculcate a habit of proper management of solid wastes at household level among children right at the source of garbage generation. He said that besides staff of JMC – JDA all the organizations / departments should educate their employees about the non-burning of solid wastes to avoid air pollution. Dr. C.M Seth, IFS (Retd), Environmentalist and State Co-Convener of INTACH briefed the participants about the urbanization of the cities – towns with modern techniques to avoids air pollution. He said that natural environment (Heritage) such as trees, landscaped areas, green fields; water bodies should be protected at all cost. Prof. Anil K. Raina, Environmental Science Dept. University of Jammu gave a very educated presentation covering major aspects of protecting the environment. Dr. Yash Paul Sr. Scientist, J&K Pollution Control Board made a PowerPoint presentation mentioning the parameters of Air Pollution and remedies their of with enforcement regulations. Dr. Zaffer Iqbal, Municipal Veitanary Officer (Nodal Officer). Solid Waste Management Jammu Municipal Cooperation explained the steps taken by JMC for disposal of solid wastes for its conversion in to manure, the burning of solid waste has been stopped by JMC. S. Jorawar Singh, master trainer solid waste management one of the resource person spoke on different aspects of air pollution with special reference to burning of solid waste which has been ordered to be stopped by JMC staff. Prof. Raj Kumar Rampal, Head Of Dept. Environmental Sciences, University Of Jammu. While Welcoming the Chief Guest, Guest Of Honour and other guests, faculty members, resources persons and participants suggested that awareness at the supervisory level of JMC / JDA against burning of solid wastes can play an important role in getting read of the problem of burning to the great extent. Mr. S. M Sahini KAS (Retd.) Convener INTACH Jammu Chapter proposed a vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, Guest Of Honour / Guests and all the participants which included the faculty members, scholars, students, staff members of JMC/JDA/ University Of Jammu for sparing their valuable time and taking keen interest in the interactive meet to save environment and also to get rid of burning of solid wastes. He further stated that the supervisory staff of JMC through their respective karamcharies shall send the message across Jammu city households not to burn the solid wastes and also to keep their Environment NEAT & CLEAN with a pledge for “Swachata”. Special thanks were made for press and media persons for covering the event.
INTACH Faridabad Chapter oraganised an inter college (girls) heritage declamation and on the spot painting competition was held at K. L. Mehta Dayanand College for Women at Faridabad and Aggarwal College for women, Ballabgarh. The participants enthusiastically participated and winners were awarded with prizes and certificates.
The Film it Project aims at engaging middle school children, in a film making project that requires students to make short films on different aspects of their heritage. These films are conceptualised as well shot by children. The participating students thus attend a workshop that is conducted by Heritage Education and Communication Service, (HECS) INTACH. The workshop has two parts to it, the first is the content workshop and the second is the technical workshop.
The Filmit technical workshop for schools of Delhi – NCR was organized at INTACH. Over 100 students from 32 schools of the city, the workshop commenced with Ms. Shivaa Rawat, HECS Representative giving a brief introduction of the project and its milestones. With new cities being added and completing 12 years of its successful running.
Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS addressed the students and teachers asking them about the Namaskar in different languages, stressing on the composite culture of India. She spoke about the project and acknowledged the efforts of teacher mentors on this project, one of whom was Ms. Sasmita Satpathy from the Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. Sharing with the audience, Ms. Satpathy has mentored the students from her school, working on this project for the past 10 years. Ms. Datt was appreciative of the support of the teachers and students for making this project successful. This was followed by a brief run through of the themes for the current year
This was followed by a technical session with Mr. Ankit Pogula and Ms. Sanjana Chopra of Tuning Fork Films, this focussed on the 3 major aspects of film making namely – planning, shooting and editing. Mr Ankit started his session by asking students, why are films so powerful? The students responded that films allow one to express our minds and enable us to see things and provide a somewhat tangible expression of an idea or concept. Films also have a strong potential for communicating an idea or an emotion as visuals are appealing to the audience.
The speaker, discussed the importance of shots and angles and their use as well as relevance in film making, post the refreshment break a session on editing was conducted which focused on the use of editing software, especially Windows movie maker and its various features, essential for short film making.
Concluding his remarks on editing, He then briefed the students about four clear steps of editing as follows-
a. assembly
b. adding text and music
c. managing brightness and contrast, audio levels, effects and transitions
d. and exporting with recommended setting
The students were then addressed by Dr. Mrs. C. T. Misra, Member Secretary, INTACH. She was greatly impressed with the session on editing taken by the resource person, and shared that she also learnt something. She wished the students all the best for their endeavors. She was also very appreciative of the activities of HECS.
The workshop ended with awarding of trophies to 2 teacher mentors, for their continuing support on the project. Mrs. Sasmita Satpathy of Delhi Public School and Mrs. Seema Puri of Modern School were given an award of appreciation commending their efforts of the project.
The Filmit Delhi Content Workshop was held on 26 July 2019 at INTACH New Delhi. The workshop was enthusiastically attended by 37 schools represented by 38 teachers and around 111 students. It began with a welcome note by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, INTACH HECS) and an introduction to the resource person, Mr Feisal Alkazi. Thereafter, a detailed session explaining the various themes for Filmit 2019-20 was undertaken by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, INTACH HECS).
In the next segment, the session on Filmit Content was undertaken by Mr Feisal Alkazi. It was emphasised how it was necessary to have personal stories that touched one’s heart. In a brain storming session, participants were asked to think of different topics and maintain a new approach. In a group exercise, participants were encouraged to share a personal story adhering to the Filmit theme (in terms of overall meaning and effectively conveying the heritage ideas). The Workshop concluded with a felicitation of the Paani ki Kahani Regional Winner with trophies, Filmit workshop participants with filmit DVDs and commemorative group photograph.
A Teacher Training Workshop was organised by INTACH’s Nagpur Chapter and Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) on 19th-20th July 2019 at the Shriniwas Public School,Seminary Hills, at Nagpur.It was attended by 56 teachers from 30 institutions in the city. The guests for the programme were Mr. Chandrashekhar Gupta(ex-honorary director of the department of travel and tourism and former Convenor of INTACH Nagpur Chapter), Mr. Kishor Diwekar (Convenor INTACH Nagpur Chapter), Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo Principal of Shrimati Manorama Mundle College of Architecture (SMMCA) ,Dr. Shyamala Nair (Secretary of Women’s Education Society),Mr.Shirish Deshmukh. Dr.Madhura Rathod, Co-Convenor INTACH Nagpur Chapter gave the inaugral address followed by Ms.Purnima Datt (Principal Director , Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH) who gave a brief introduction of INTACH and its role in heritage conservation.Ms. Datt also spoke about the importance of teacher’s and their impact on the students.
Following this , the esteemed guests addressed in brief the importance of heritage and heritage education. Dr.Shyamala Nair spoke about understanding the importance of the past. Dr.Nair describes the past as an umblical cord, the source of our origin. Dr.Ujjawala Chakradeo spoke about the importance of teaching children to love and respect their heritage. Mr. Chandra Shekhar Gupta spoke about Nagpur and its intangible heritage. Dr.Gupta spoke about the Marbat festival, lesser known temples and other unknown features of Nagpur’s history.
Archana Nandpurkar , principal of Shriniwas Public School proposed the vote of thanks.
The following session was taken by Ms.Nitika Ramani, Executive MEmber INTACH on the rich history of Nagpur. She spoke about the origin and history of NAgpur. Its famous monuments, e important natural heritage sites, intangible heritage elements like Khadi Gammath, Khadi Lavani etc. were also discussed.
Architectural Sankul, an organisation aiming to generate awareness about Nagpur’s heritage was also introduced by Ms.Ramani.
The INTACH film was shown to the participants. Following the screening of the film Ms. Datt addressed the audience and asked teachers to share one place that is close to their hearts where they feel at peace and about any personal heritage items. Teachers shared places like Sitabuldi fort,Dhunda Maruti temple etc. where they felt at peace. Teachers also shared about personal heritage items like letters by grandparents, utensils passed from one generation to others amongst many other things.
Ms.Datt also spoke about heritage and its various aspects and also discussed about the various kinds of Indian heritage. This session was followed by lunch.
The third session began with a fun game called romantic pairs. Following this Heritage Education was introduced in detail through screening of a film about HECS activities and a presentation made by Ms.Datt (Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH).Innovative practices and ideas for heritage education were also discussed.
The session concluded with a group activity on heritage which would be presented by the participants on the second day of the workshop.
On the second day a heritage walk was organised to Shri Kalyaneshwar Shiv Temple. The walk was led by Ms.Nitika Ramani who spoke about the rich history of the temple and also about its unique features.
Following the walk the participants were shown the HECS film highlighting the work done by HECS. Filmit Films El Cambio and Mystic Colors of India were also shown. Ms.Datt informed teachers about the various resources produced by HECS. The importance of heritage education was also emphasised upon along with the setting up of Heritage clubs.
Following this session group presentations took place. The participants in five groups highlighted different aspects of heritage through presentations. Groups were divided on the basis of Built, Natural, Material Heritage and Living Heritage. Interesting presentations were made by all groups.
Teachers also provided feedback at the end of the session. Many of them shared how they had a new perspective of their heritage and gained much knowledge of their city which was new to them. They spoke about how they will try to incorporate heritage education in their classrooms.
Following the presentation of the group work, teachers were felicitated by Mr. Kishore Diwekar, Ms. Purnima Datt and Dr.Madhura Rathod. Teachers were given certificates and books.
Saplings were planted by Ms.Purnima Datt, Mr.Kishore Diwekar and other guests including Ms.Archana Nandpurkar, Pricnicpal of Shriniwas Public School.
The workshop concluded on a positive note with teachers looking forward to exploring heritage education in their classrooms and schools.
The Anantapur Teacher Training Workshop was held on 10th – 11th July, 2019 at KSN Degree College for Women. Convenor, Mr. Venu Gopal Reddy gave the opening address. He welcomed the participants and the resource people. He also gave a brief introduction about INTACH and the work that is being done by the chapter in the district. Ms. Purnima Datt spoke to the teachers and gave a brief introduction about INTACH and its various divisions. The INTACH film was screened so that the teachers could have a better understanding of the nature of work being carried out. Mr. Appireddy Harinath Reddy was the local resource person and spoke about the local heritage of Anantapur. He said that history is a very important factor in deciding the future.
After a short tea break, Ms. Purnima Datt took the next session. She asked the teachers to share their favourite heritage places. She showed a presentation on the different types of heritage by with India as the focal point. Important symbols of natural, built, material and living heritage were stressed upon. For example, national symbols, historical sites, local cuisines, etc. There was a lunch break after this detailed session.
After the lunch break, an ice breaker game called romantic pairs was played. The winners were presented with a CD called ‘Heritage and Harmony’. After that, another presentation on heritage education was shown. The aspects of heritage education were discussed and also a role playing activity was done. Two teachers volunteered to do a role play by being a modern day ball point pen and a traditional ink pot and both spoke about the uses and advantages of their respective roles (pen and inkpot). After this informative and entertaining activity, the teachers were divided into five groups (natural, built, material, living – folk dances and music). They sat in their respective groups and discussed the group activity that was to be done the following day. The first day ended with tea and snacks being served.
On the second day, all participants were taken to the famous heritage site Lepakshi for a full day heritage tour. The group visited the famous Veerbhadra temple which was carved out of rock on a small hillock. It is famous for its stone architecture and wall paintings made of natural colours that are painted on the ceilings. After lunch, everyone visited the Nandi bull (biggest in the world) sculpture. Their group activity was done presented inside the premises of the site followed by the distribution of resource material and certificates. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks made by the Mr. Venu Gopal Reddy. He thanked the teachers for attending the workshop and hoped that they learnt from the two day’s sessions and activities.
The national level outreach programmes of the Heritage Education and Communication Service Division, seeks to reach out to middle and senior school students across the country, with the help of local INTACH Chapters, HECS organises various national level competitions, which are based on interesting themes inspired from Indian heritage and cultural traditions. In a bid to focus students’ attention on the dynamic water heritage features across the country the theme PAANI KI KAHANI was chosen
The 10 national winners along with their teachers were hosted at Ahmedabad’s premier urban heritage hotel, The House of Mangaldas Girdhardas in collaboration with INTACH Ahmedabad Chapter.
Through the educational trip the students got a unique opportunity to visit the composite cultural traditions of India’s first World Heritage City. The students and the accompanying teachers undertook a heritage walk of the Old city of Ahmedabad, the walk started at the iconic Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, just across the House of MG.The winners were taken to the residential locality of the old city and were explained the concept of pols and the shown the water storage facilities of a typical Gujarati household. Through the walk students also got an opportunity to visit several iconic structures within the old city.
Keeping up with the theme of the competition, on the second day the students were taken to visit the Adalaj ki Vav, a 15th century step well, students were also taken to the Calico Museum of Textiles for an extremely informative and interesting session that brought to fore the dynamic uses of textiles in our country and the importance of preserving such pieces of art. The post lunch session was at the Centre for Environment Education; the session conducted by the experts from CEE focused on traditional methods of water conservation in western India and the projects of the organisation in developing community based water conservation systems. The session sensitized the students to become responsible citizens.
The third day of the trip saw the students along with their teachers visiting the Sabarmati Ashram, alongside the River Sabarmati. The visit to the ashram was really insightful for the students as it allowed them to understand the life, work and contribution of Mahatma Gandhi towards building a new and independent India in a motivating way. After this visit, the students and teachers were escorted to Shreyas Foundation School, for their felicitation ceremony. Chief Guest, Dr. Yogesh Jadeja (Specialist in ground water management aspects in Semi-Arid Regions of country. Founder of ACT - Arid Communities and Technologies.
He said that it is very heartening to see young students being concerned about saving water, and coming together on a platform like this. His address was followed by the award ceremony, the students were given a trophy along with a certificate and India Unlimited – A Travel Diary, the accompanying teachers were also presented with a handbook on Caring for Heritage along with the Young INTACH Newsletter. The event ended with a commemorative group photograph.
The Heritage and Citizenship Workshop was organised by INTACH Srikakulam Chapter on 19 June 2019 at the Youth Training Centre (YTC), Government College (Men), Campus Srikakulam. It was enthusiastically attended by 90 participants. The Convenor INTACH Srikakulam Chapter, Mr KVJ RadhaPrasad welcomed all the guests. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr J Nivas, IAS (District Collector and Chief Patron INTACH, Srikakulam District). The keynote address was delivered by Mr L Siva Sankar, IAS (Project Officer, ITDA, Seethampeta). The special guests were Mr KSNV Prasad (Architect and President, District Engineer’s Association) and Mr P Rajanikant Rao (Joint Collector-2, Srikakulam).The valedictory session was convened by Mr V Jagannadha Naidu with Chief Guests, Prof. Dr K Ramji (Vice Chancellor, Dr B R Ambedkar University, Etcherla). The workshop concluded with a summing up by Mr V J Naidu (INTACH member) and a vote of thanks by Mr N Sanyasi Rao (Additional Convenor, INTACH Srikakulam Chapter).
The Teacher Training Workshop organised by INTACH Jammu chapter in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) was held on 8 and 9 May 2019 at the Army Public School, Nagrota. It was attended by 30 teachers from 19 schools across the city. The workshop began with a welcome note shared by Mr S M Sahni (Convenor, INTACH Jammu) and an introductory address by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, INTACH HECS). It was followed by an address delivered by Ms Ruchi Bahl (Principal Army Public School, Nagrota). Thereafter, the inaugural address was delivered by the Chief Guest, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) G. S. Jamwal, AVSM. He reflected over the importance of heritage and the need for participants to recognise the wealth of heritage they were surrounded with. He highlighted the military heritage and the magnificent heritage of the Dogras. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr C. M. Seth (Co-Convenor, INTACH State Chapter).

It was followed by a session on Heritage Education in Classrooms and establishing Heritage Clubs. The participants were enthusiastic in their responses and varied descriptions on what heritage meant.
Highlight of the second day of the workshop was a site visit to Kol Kandoli (Nagrota) Temple that houses the pindi (holy mound) and ancient brass idol. The session was conducted by Dr C. M. Seth who re-iterated the convergence of cultural history with natural heritage, as well as, aspects of sustainability. In the next session, the HECS film, HECS activity overview, and aspects of the young intach website was presented by Ms Purnima Datt and supported by Ms Shivaa Rawat (Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH). Thereafter, a detailed session on Intangible Cultural Heritage and Oral Traditions (including, the importance of regional languages, like Dogri) was highlighted by Prof. Sudhir Singh (Head of Department, English, Government Girls College, Udhampur). In the final segment, group presentations were made by participants and appreciated by the Chief Guest, Brig. A.S. Berar, VSM who commended on the efforts, as well as, pedagogical approach to introducing heritage into classroom learning. Thereafter, all participants were felicitated with workshop resource material and certificates by Ms Ruchi Bahl (Principal, Army Public School Nagrota) along with INTACH Jammu chapter and INTACH HECS representatives. The Teacher Training Workshop organised by INTACH Varanasi chapter in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) was held on 2 and 3 May 2019 at the Little Flower House School in Varanasi. It was attended by 49 teachers from 24 schools across the city. The workshop began with a welcome note shared by Mr Nirmal Joshi (INTACH Varanasi, Heritage Education Incharge). It was followed by an inaugural address delivered by Mr Ashok Kapoor (Convenor, INTACH Varanasi).
Session on Material Culture of Varanasi – with a focus on the Bharat Kala Bhawan University Museum was delivered by Prof. Pradosh Kumar Mishra. While the Rock Paintings at Vindhayas was described by Prof. Ajay Pratap. It was followed by a discussion on pilgrim heritage tourism with reference to the Heritage City of Varanasi by Mr S K Sahni (Convenor INTACH Varanasi). It was followed by a session on Heritage Education in Classrooms and establishing Heritage Clubs.

The efforts of the participants and their enthusiasm to establish heritage clubs was appreciated by Mr Ashok Kapoor (Convenor, INTACH Varanasi).
A two day teacher training workshop was held on 24th and 25th April, 2019 at Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Port Blair. 50 teachers from 28 schools participated. The workshop was inaugurated by the lighting of the lamp ceremony by the Chief Guest and the resource persons. In the inaugural session, Andaman Convenor, Ms. Samhita Veda Acharya spoke to the participants about the kind of work that INTACH does. A short film on INTACH and its various divisions was also shown. Chief Guest, Ms. Nabanita Ganguly, DCF, Forest Department, in her address expressed her happiness at being present for the workshop. She remarked that teachers are the most important linkage in the society. The principal of the host school, Mr. Sharad Chandran said that it is the responsibility of the citizens to conserve their heritage. Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director Heritage Education and Communication Service spoke about the INTACH and asked the teachers about their favourite aspect of heritage. While some teachers responded by naming the places they liked to visit frequently, some also mentioned about their cultural heritage. A few examples were: Cellular Jail, Marina Park, Radha Nagar beach, family jewellery, etc.
The second session started with a talk by resource person Mr. Sheikh Farooq Alam. He talked about Andaman’s religious and political history. He also gave suggestions on how to project Andaman and Nicobar’s history through various programmes. Ms. Datt, in her presentation, talked about the types of heritage. She explained to the teachers about the meaning of heritage, its different types and why it is important to take care of each aspect of our heritage; ie: natural, built, material and living heritage. She also spoke about the geographical diversity of the Indian subcontinent and the geology of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In the post lunch session, a presentation on heritage education was shown. Methods were discussed on how to impart heritage education. An activity was also demonstrated, where one teacher each represented a ball point pen and an old inkpot. They did a role play and spoke about the importance of their respective characters and argued which one was more important.
After the presentation, Ms. Samhita spoke to the participants about the local heritage of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She particularly stressed on the need to save the natural heritage of the islands as it is under threat. The etymology of Andaman and Nicobar was also discussed, how Andaman has been named from ‘Handuman’ referring to Lord Hanuman and Nicobar from ‘Nakkavaram’ literally meaning naked people. She also spoke about the brief Japanese presence in the pre independence days.
Later, the teachers were divided into four groups after her informative talk to have a discussion on their group activity which was to be held the next day. The first day ended after tea being served to the participants.
Day two started with a heritage walk to Gandhi Bagh. It was established by former Lt. Governor Vakkom Purushothammam. Previously, it was known as ‘Dilthaman Tank’. A small Japanese temple and a bunker made by the Japanese, recently restored by INTACH were covered during the walk. After the heritage walk, one session was conducted by Ms. Datt on the activities undertaken by HECS. Afterwards, the teachers presented their group activity in an innovative way through the help of presentations, skits and songs. Mr. Sharad Chandran was invited for the closing ceremony. The workshop concluded with the distribution of certificates and resource material by him and Ms. Datt.
On the occasion of World Heritage Day, an interactive session was organized on Pittekar painting, under the auspices of Jharkhand Chapter, at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Jamshedpur, in Bishtupur, where INTACH's Heritage Club was built. This art of Jharkhand is a unique art in itself, this popular scroll painting known as 'Pat' in Manbhum, and painting art is painted on paints. The main objective of INTACH is to make people aware of the heritage and protection of the environment. Today the art of Pitekar painting is on the brink of extinction. This topic has been selected on this occasion to give protection to this art. Shri Kishore singing and have been invited from the Amadubai village of Dhalbhumgarh block, they have made thousands of paintings on this art. His work has also been highly praised by the state government. 31 participants selected by the school in Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Bishtupur participated. Mr. Kishore Gayan, a young artist from Amadubi village, introduced the participants about the art and natural colors used in them and started the session and motivated the students to create a painting in this style. Mr. Amitav Ghosh, co-convenor of the centric art, INTACH, told the students, teachers and management committee in detail about World Heritage Day and told about the utility of natural colors used in art paint. In this session, he also explained how chemical color is contaminating the environment today and knowing and protecting this heritage should be the primary responsibility of every citizen. Mr. Bhaiya Manjhi, member of INTACH also expressed his views on this subject. The school management committee highly appreciated this effort of INTACH and the teacher Mrs. Sushma Prasad and Mrs Shweta described the topic of the session as unprecedented.
An interactive session was also organized on the occasion of World Heritage Day on the Pittekar painting work with the help of Juko High School, Kadma Heritage Club, under the aegis of INTACH Jharkhand Chapter. This art of Jharkhand is a unique art in its own right. This popular scroll painting, known as 'Pat' in Manabhum, is painted on painting by painting the art of painting. On this occasion Shri Vijay painter has been invited from Amadubi village of Dhalboomgarh block, he has made thousands of paintings till date. He has received many awards and honors from the state government for this work. The session started with Deep Prajavalan by Mr. Vipul Verma, member of INTACH. School Principal Mrs. Jhumzhumi Nandi and Vice-Principal Mrs. Anindita Roy Patekar were already acquainted with the arts, so that they were trained by Jurus by her Heritage Club and the students of Jusco High School, South Park and Kashidih High School were familiar with this art. 60 participants were present at the interactive session. Each student got clear information about PYTEK art; they distributed the students in groups. He described this art very interestingly and explained the natural colors and its sources in detail. Students appreciated this much. Mr. Kunal, a member of INTACH, himself a designer, also expressed his views about this art. Art teacher of Juso High School, Shri Abhishek Mukherjee, Shri Somnath Chaudhary, Shri Vikas Das and Shri Samar Ghosh were also very impressed with this art. The school management requested the INTACH Jharkhand Chapter that they can be informed about such a program for which they will be prepared for all and also for the event calendar of INTACH.
Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Ambala Chapter celebrated the World Heritage Day on 18th April, 2019, at the Indra Chowk where nearly 100 participants from 14 schools took part in the noble event. Brig (retd) D. K. Khullar, AVSM, Padam Shri, Arjuna Awardee, was the chief guest. Brig Khullar is a renowned mountaineer who successfully led a team of 11 men and six women in 1984 to Mount Everest. The following senior members and dignitaries were present: Brig G. S. Lamba (retd), Colonel B. S. Kaundal, Mr. Vinay Malhotra, Dr. R.S. Dhillon, Ms. Vijay Sharma (HOD Hindi deptt, S. D. College), Mrs. Anupama Arya, Principal, Arya Girls college, and Ms. Shashi Dhamija, Mr. H. S. Purewal (renowned painter), Prem Mahindru (Advocate and a Rotarian), and Subedar Major Malkiat Singh ( retd).
There was a Heritage Awareness Rally led by Convenor of INTACH Ambala, Col R. D. Singh and Ms Reena (an Art teacher at the Cantt Board School) and Co-convenor where all the children carried out a walk from Indira Chowk to Arya Girls College. The children took out banners and heritage banners for public awareness. The rally was much appreciated and impressed by the public and also by Ms. Kumari Selja, MP who appreciated the enthusiasm and cheered the children and also the INTACH members. After the rally, there was a short function at Arya Girls College where Mrs. Madhu Singh, a senior teacher from the Army School conducted a short and interesting quiz for the children based on the heritage of Ambala. Prizes were also given out to the winners. Thereafter Colonel R. D. Singh, Convenor INTACH, highlighted the major activities which Ambala INTACH Chapter carried out during the last year. He also shared the number of awards won by Ambala Chapter including Nikita Bhat of the PKR Jain School winning a National Award in the painting competition, and our CJM team reaching the National Finals in the Heritage Quiz contest.
The chief guest, Brig D. K. Khullar, shared his rich experiences of mountaineering and army life with children and awarded prizes to the winners. Dr. Purewal, Dr. R. S. Dhillon, Brig Lamba, Vijay Sharma, and Subedar Major Malkiat Singh also addressed and complimented the students for the noble cause. Prizes were given to the motivated teachers of school heritage clubs. The prize winning Heritage Clubs were of KV3, and the DAV River Side School. The chief guest complimented INTACH Ambala for its active role in preserving our heritage and culture and also bringing Hindi medium schools in the main stream of heritage activities. Colonel R. D. Singh thanked the chief guest, and congratulated all the children and their teachers for their keen participation. He asked the children to grow up healthy with good sanskars. The event was successful and impressive. All the participants were felt motivated and happy to become heritage ambassadors of their school. There was impressive press coverage of the event in seven papers, including Punjabi Tribune Chandigarh.
The INTACH Chpater of East Godavari celebrated the World Heritage Day with all zeal and enthusiasm amidst large numbers of participants. The dying Folk Art Dances of East Godavari District, like- Tappeta Gullu, Veeranatyam, Garagalu, Pagati Veshalu and Dappu Vayidyam (Drum Beats) were organized to create awareness amongst the people as well as to encourage the artists. The program was conducted in a natural, green, airy, open environment in the Amphitheater of the Vivekananda Park in the heart of the Kakinada city, which was witnessed by over 300 people which included Doctors, Lawyers, retired Lecturers and Principals of Colleges and the elite of the City.
The Chief Patron Sri Kartikeya Misra, IAS, Sri K. Ramesh, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Kakinada and Sri Sumeetkumar, IAS, Commissioner Municipal Corporation, Rajamahendravaram who, in spite of their hectic work have taken time and witnessed the program interestingly, by squatting along with the crowd on the steps. The Print and Electronic media captured the event and collected information of the dances which was covered widely in the news papers and the local TVs on the next day. Lighting and Sound system were arranged by Sri S. Mallibabu, General Manager of SETRAJ, who is also in-charge of District Youth Welfare Office, Kakinada and Municipal Corporation Kakinada. Smt. L. Seshakumari, Co-Convener, INTACH, Andhra Pradesh Chapter, Sri VVLN. Murthy, Convener, East Godavari Chapter and Sri V. Ramakrishna, Co-Convener of the Chapter, INTACH members and others have participated in the program.
INTACH/Visakhapatnam Chapter celebrated World Heritage Day in a unique way by involving School Children to collect antique and heritage related items from their homes and curate them at Visakha Museum. They had innumerable stories to relate to the public of Visakhapatnam in relation to their Heritage Items. They also brought stories on the history of Musical Instruments, Different Dance forms and Monuments. They day long program was widely covered by print and electronic media. About 26 children from 3 schools participated in the event. Participation certificates were also distributed. The event also received good coverage by print and electronic media. The INTACH Visakhapatnam also plans to do a photo exhibition of the Rail Heritage which has completed 125 years of its establishment in Visakhapatnam.
On the occasion of Heritage Day celebrations (18 April), the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) of INTACH in collaboration with Mapin Publishing, organised a a One-day Teacher Training Workshop on India’s Multi-faceted Heritage, Delhi's heritage, as well as, its World Heritage Sites on 16th April 2019 at INTACH New Delhi. It was attended by 50 teachers from 45 schools of Delhi NCR. The sessions by resource persons were enriching and informative. Ms Purnima Datt [Principal Director, HECS] shared a welcome note and introduced heritage through a presentation on India Unlimited – HECS City Travel Journal (two volumes). Dr Swapna Liddle (Historian, Author and Convenor INTACH Delhi Chapter) discussed ‘Delhi's Built Heritage and its relationship with Living Heritage’; ‘Mr Bipin Shah [Director, Mapin India] and Dr. Narayani Gupta [Historian and Former Director INTACH Documentation Centre] discussed ways in which Students could be made to engage with World Heritage Sites and enable them to interact with it. Mr Shashi Shetye [Artist, Illustrator and Cartoonist] emphasised on imaginative and creative learning, in the context of heritage education. Mr Sohail Hashmi [Writer, Academic, Documentary Film-Maker] showcased the World Heritage Sites, with a focus on Sanchi Stupa. Mr Sopan Joshi [Author and Journalist] emphasised on the importance of education and the role of educationists in nurturing heritage sensitive values among pupils. The final segment of the workshop included, group presentations by participants on using varied narratives to enable students to engage with heritage more creatively. The workshop concluded with the words of encouragement by Member Secretary INTACH, Dr CT Mishra and distribution of certificates along with the workshop resource materials.
Heritage Club of MMPS, organised a visit of State Museum, Ahar (Udaipur) which acquinted them with archaeological sites besides Banas Culture and stone age jewelry, etc. With a view to generate awareness regarding natural heritage, an Essay Writing Competition on ‘My Water Heritage’ was orgainsed for the students of class VI-IX.
Twenty members of The HERITAGE CLUB OF MMPS with their teacher incharge Mrs. Pratima Paliwal visited Sanjay Garden for bird watching, to study the resident and migaratory birds. Shri S.K. Verma, Principal Advisor, NHD, Mr. Sohail Majboor (Dy. Forest Conservator), Mr. Dipendra Shrimali, Mr. Akshat Khamesra and Mr. Vidhan (Experts and Wild Lifers) guided the students on bird species and their identification.
Rajasthan Heritage Photo Competition, 2019, was organized successfully. Thereafter, photos received (131) were exhibited in the gallery of the State Museum, Ahar, during February 19th- 21st 2019. Members and public at large visited the exhibition. The ‘Exhibition’ was inaugurated by Rtn. Hans Raj Choudhary, President, Udaipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 19th February at 11:30 A.M. Shri Munish Goel, IAS (Retd.) presided over while Shri Pradeep Kothari, Director SIERT and Additional Commissioner of Devasthan, was the Chief Guest. Prizes were awarded to all the prize winners.
Event coordinator Dr. P.S. Ranawat explained the ‘theme’ to the audience while Dr. B.P. Bhatnagar, Convener, welcomed the guests and thanked each one, who directly or indirectly helped the Chapter in organising this historic event. He made a special mention of Prof. Lalit Pande, Prof. Mahesh Sharma, Syt. S.K. Verma, IFS (Retd.), Dr. P.S. Ranwat, Dr. Vinod Agarwal, CA Vinod Vyas, Dr. Vineet Godhal, Shri Sunil Vashistha, Gaurav Singhvi, Shri. M. S. Rathore, Sudhir and Manita Bhatnagar alongwith media persons for giving a wide coverage. As a follow-up activity, Rajasthan Patrika visited a few sites, on the basis of photos, and reported the situation on different dates.
Dr. B.P. Bhatnagar, Convener, attended the Orientation Workshop at INTACH HQ, New Delhi. The workshop was very interesting and educative. Views and guidance were provided by the Chairman, Vice Chairperson, Member Secretary and all Principal Directors of various divisions who gave a clear presentation to highlight their activities. Chapter Division’s presentation on the overall administration of the chapter was quite educative. The members very much enjoyed the workshop, both in terms of academic as well as social interaction with conveners from different states. Experience sharing part was very effective leading to “INTACH FAMILY WA GROUP"
Heritage games (like Sitoliya, Gilli-Danda, Lattu etc.) Award Giving Function was held on 22nd March, 2019, on the auspicious day of ‘Yam Dwitiya’ to award the prizes to winners of all heritage games organised earlier. It was sponsored by Dr. B.P. Bhatnagarwho was the Guest of Honor on this occasion.
A Creative Photography workshop was organized at Sunbeam College for Women Bhagwanpur. The students of Sunbeam College Bhagwanpur witnessed and experienced the creativity through the languages of lens. Mr. Ashok Kapoor, Convener, Varanasi Chapter gave a brief introduction of INTACH and narrated the Chapter activities. Binay Rawal, a renowned photo artist of Banaras was invited for an interactive session. It was a session with a small group of about 40 students participated in creative vision and photography. Mr. Rawal explained the techniques of taking photos in different season and in different time of the day. He also explained the work of great photo artists and maestros and showed some rate award winning pictures. It was one and a half hour presentation followed by half an hour of interaction and question answer session. Mr. Nirmal Joshi, Addl Co Convener, INTACH Varanasi proposed vote of thanks. It was decided that selected students from this group will go for Photo walk on World Heritage Day with Binay Rawal and some members of INTACH and click photos of heritage sites and areas. The creative workshop programme has become quite a popular programme of INTACH Varanasi. To start with, Creative photography and clay pottery workshops are being held in schools and colleges which are INTACH institutional members. A workshop of painting on heritage subjects is being planned for the institutions. Clay Pottery workshop will be held during this month only.
INTACH’S Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) in collaboration with INTACH Chandigarh chapter organized the Chandigarh Filmit Festival on 10 April 2019 at St. Kabir Public School. 68 students and 10 teachers from 8 schools were a part of the event.
Ms. Shivaa Rawat (National Coordinator, INTACH HECS) highlighted the importance of Filmit with its multi-cultural objectives. She described how INTACH HECS in collaboration with Helen Hamlyn Trust (United Kingdom) through Filmit India had encouraged several students to make short films on their city’s heritage.
Mr. VK Kapoor, Convener, INTACH Chandigarh Chapter, addressed the students and teachers and welcomed them. He also introduced and welcomed – Justice Vinod Sharma (Retd. High Court Judge) and Shri Mahavir Singh (Sessions Judge) after the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, the students were invited on stage to share their experience of working on the Filmit project.
This was followed by a screening of the best overall films, from filmit cities across the country. The films showcased were based upon the themes of peace and harmony through different aspects of heritage. After this the best films made by the students of Chandigarh were screened.
Chief Guest, Shri Singh was invited to address the children and share his thoughts on the films screened. Shri Singh really lauded the films that were screened and praised the students for their ideas, originality and presentation. He further added that watching the films also allowed him to learn more, especially films like Secretive 13 – which explores the probable absence of Sec – 13 in Chandigarh, and traditional cuisine like Bajra Khichdi which is slowly vanishing from homes.
Convener Mr. Kapoor also shared his insights on the film, stating that after watching the films he was extremely proud and that he could see in making some great film makers of the future. Ms. Deepika Gandhi (Member, INTACH Chandigarh Chapter), Ms. Gandhi congratulated all students, adding that students these days are part of so many activities along with the pressure of academics. She stated that despite all these obstacles and preoccupations students who have been able to be part of this project are really commendable.
The award ceremony commenced right after the guests shared their views. Schools were given a set of interesting and interactive publications, along with award certificates and participation certificates. The festival ended with a commemorative group photograph.
The College Heritage Volunteer Workshop organised by INTACH Jammu Chapter in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) was held on 3 April 2019 at the Government Degree College (GDC), Udhampur. It was attended by over 120 college students and 60 faculty members representing various colleges in the city. The workshop was inaugurated with a welcome address by Dr Nutan Restura (Principal, GDC (Boys), Udhampur). It was followed by an introduction to INTACH and the workshop objectives by Ms Shivaa Rawat (INTACH HECS). Presiding over the session was the Chief Guest, Mr Hemant Sharma (Retd. I.A.S.). He encouraged INTACH in its heritage education endeavours and looked forward to an interactive workshop with the college students. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr SM Sahni (Convenor, INTACH Jammu).
An overview of Heritage and College Volunteerism was offered by Ms Shivaa Rawat supported by Mr Abhishek Das (HECS representatives).Mr Shiv Nirmohi spoke about the Heritage of Jammu and Kashmir State. The Local Heritage - Art, Culture and Literature was described by Mr Prakash Premi. The Natural Heritage of the City was discussed by Dr C.M. Seth (Co-Convenor INTACH Jammu and Kashmir State).Further, the participants were briefed about the heritage activities undertaken by INTACH Jammu Chapter through an experiential account shared by Mr SM Sahni (Convenor, INTACH Jammu). The presentations made by the resource persons were interactive, interesting and captivating. They offered n overview of the distinct and rich heritage of Udhampur City.
Establishing a link between culture, heritage and nature – it was pointed out how conservation, protection and care went hand-in-hand. The students were asked to delve and dive deeper into their city’s natural, cultural and living heritage. The Valedictory session was attended by dignitaries, Mr Kuldeep Wahi (Co-Convenor, INTACH Jammu) and Mr Ashok Kumar (Additional Commissioner, KAS). They were briefed about the workshop proceedings and outcome by Prof. Sudhir Singh. It was followed by a vote of thanks by Mr Kuldeep Wahi (CoConvenor, INTACH Jammu). The workshop concluded on an overwhelmingly positive note with participants expressing enthusiasm for exploring their city’s heritage and carrying out varied heritage initiatives across colleges.
The Department of History, Kamala Nehru College, in collaboration with INTACH’s Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) organized the annual department festival, Chrono 2019 on 29th March 2019 in the college premises.
The events of the day included the Annual Lecture by Prof.Awadhendra Sharan on "The Nature of Air : Historical Reflections" . A Panel Discussion was held on the topic "Masculinity & Feminity" with panel members including Prof.Farhat Hasan, Prof.Seema Bawa and Dr. Charu Gupta.
The cultural event included a Dastangoi performance by Ms. Fouzia Dastango and Ms. Saneya . The event was organised by Department of History and the Book Club of Kamala Nehru College. The Dastaan was based on the story “Nanhi ki Naani” written by Ismat Chughtai.
A two-day Teacher Training was organised by INTACH Telengana State chapter in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) on 27 - 28 March 2019 at the Sree Venkateswara Hotel, Lakdikapool, Hyderabad. It was attended by 45 participants representing 27 schools from across the city. The workshop welcome note was shared by Mr Gopalakrishna [State Convenor, INTACH Telangana Chapter] with an introduction to INTACH and Heritage Education by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, INTACH HECS). The sessions by the resource persons were enriching and informative. Mr Veerender (Ex-Curator, Birla Museum and Salarjung Museum) spoke about the Need for Archealogical and Heritage Awareness. Mr Shiva Nagi Reddy (CEO, Vijaywada Cultural Centre) discussed Local Heritage Issues and Suggestions. Dr Milan Kumar Chauley (Superintending Archaeologist, ASI, Hyderabad Circle): Role of ASI in Heritage Activities and the critical role teachers in sensitising young students. The sessions on understanding Heritage and Establishing Heritage Clubs in Schools was explained by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, INTACH HECS). Including, aspects of Heritage Education and Good Citizenship. The highlight of the second day was a site visit conducted by Ms Anuradha Reddy (Co-Convenor INTACH Telangana State and Convenor, INTACH Hyderabad) to the Public Gardens, Visit to the Assembly Building, Jubilee Hall and State Museum. It exposed the teachers to the rich history and heritage of Hyderabad. On site, they were addressed by Hyderabad Police Commissioner, Mr Anjani Kumar who appreciated and encouraged teachers to help them discover the heritage of their city. Thereafter, participant’s group presentations highlighted various aspects of Hyderabad’s heritage. The workshop concluded with teachers expressing enthusiasm to establish heritage clubs and undertake heritage activities within their respective educational institutions.
The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) division of INTACH, in collaboration with the Helen Hamlyn Trust UK organised the FilmIt programme. This year, the project completed 11 years in India. At Kochi, the project was done as part of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale.
The FilmIt Festival in Kochi was held on 28th February 2019 at Children’s Park Theatre, Ernakulam, Marine Drive. It was attended by 74 students from 14 schools, while over 240 students from 16 schools had participated in the project. The chief guests were Lady Helen Hamlyn (Philanthropist, Chairperson of Helen Hamlyn Trust which funds restoration projects across the country), Dr. Shobhita Punja (Art Historian, ex-CEO National Culture Fund), and Mr. Bose Krishnamachari (President, Kochi Biennale Foundation and Director, Kochi-Muziris Biennale).
The programme started with Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS, INTACH congratulating the students for their efforts. The students were told about how Filmit has expanded to 11 cities, with Kochi being special because of its link to the Biennale. She introduced Lady Helen Hamlyn to the students and teachers.
Mr. K. J. Sohan (Convenor, Kerala State Chapter) introduced Dr. Shobhita Punja and Mr. Bose Krishnamachari to everyone present and congratulated the students for their efforts. Mr. C Babu Rajeev (Convenor, Cochin Chapter) appreciated the efforts that the students and teachers put into this project.
Mr. Bose Krishnamachari showed his pleasure in hearing about the students' involvement in and consciousness about art through this project and spoke about their films bieng showcased at the Biennale. He told the students about the importance of observing and thanked Lady Helen Hamlyn for her support to the project.
Some of the best films made by the students were shown, and they were asked to speak about their experience with the project. They spoke about their learning process and first-hand interaction with history and heritage. Some said that it was a dream-cometrue for them to get a chance to be involved in creating art.
Lady Helen Hamlyn shared with the students about how thrilled she was on seeing the beautiful, touching, sensitive films that the students made in such a short period of time. Dr. Shobhita Punja congratulated and thanked the schools for their efforts. She encouraged them to make many more films.
Mr. Sohan told the students to get more involved in the film making process and interact with and watch other films to further widen their perspectives. He urged them to use the many more opportunities and platforms that are now emerging for them to share their voice.
Following the addresses by the guests, all the students were given their participation certificates as well as awards for their films. Some of the categories for these awards were – Best Screenplay, Best Visuals, Best Researched Film, Best Cinematography, Best Film and Storyline, Best Direction, Best Innovative Story, Best Film with a Message and many more.
The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) Division of INTACH in collaboration with the INTACH Tamil Nadu Chapter organized the Filmit Festival in Sri Sankara Vidyashramam School on 19th February 2019. This was the 11th year of Filmit project in which 11 schools participated from Chennai and produced more than 40 films this year. The event was attended by 73 students and 15 teachers.
The program started with an introduction by Ms.Purnima Datt ,Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH. Ms.Datt introduced the Filmit project and to the HECS Divison of INTACH. Dr.S.Suresh, Convenor of Tamil Nadu State Chapter, INTACH introduced the students to the INTACH Tamil Nadu Chapter. Dr.Suresh also introduced the Guest of Honor Ms. Deborah Thiagrajan, Founder Director, DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Mr. Suresh Menon , an actor and cinematographer .
The students then shared their Filmit Experience through presentations where they shared about what an enriching learning experience they had during the filmmaking process and how it made them learn about their unique heritage. Following this the Best Films from each school were shown followed by the screening of Overall Best films from all cities.
The Guests then shared words of encouragement and appreciation. Ms. Deborah appreciated the films and good learning by the children. She shared that every film needs to be researched and then put together as a team . Mr. Suresh Menon said that these students belonged to a lucky generation where they have the opportunity to begin learning filmmaking so early . Mr.Menon shared that it is very important to keep the story of the film as one from the heart .
The program concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participant schools followed by a vote of thanks by Dr.Suresh.
The Annual Filmit India – Mumbai Festival 2018/19 was held on 15 February 2019 at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai. In the 11th year of the Filmit project, around eight schools represented by 140 students and teachers enthusiastically participated in the annual celebrations. The programme began with a welcome address and an overview to the Filmit India Programme by INTACH HECS representative, Ms Shivaa Rawat. Thereafter, students from each school made short presentations about their filmit experience. It included self-composed poems, songs, speeches and candid accounts of their film-making journey. The screening of the best overall Filmit films from Mumbai was followed by the best India film screenings. The Chief Guest, Mr Anand Kumar (senior Indian Railway Official and former Regional Director, ICCR, Government of India) appreciated the efforts of the students and ways in which they had presented heritage. He spoke about cinema becoming a reflection of society and Mumbai as the epicenter of cinematographic endeavours. In the wake of recent violence and unrest engulfing society, the theme of peace and harmony acquired deeper relevance according to him. He was appreciative of INTACH and Filmit for encouraging students to engage with theme of peace-harmony and helping them inculcate positive values as future citizens. He shared his positive impressions on the various films, particularly, those made on the theme of harmony and peaceful co-existence in all its dimensions through the prism of heritage. The festival concluded with an award ceremony and felicitation of all the Schools by the Chief Guest.
Dastaan - Art and Architecture Society of the Jesus and Mary College (JMC), in collaboration with INTACH’s Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) organised interesting programmes as part of the annual college festival, ‘UTSAV 2019’ held on 15 February 2019 in the college premises. Three competitions themed on history, heritage and culture were organised. These were Khayal: A Poetry Slam Competition; Tasveer: A Painting and Sketching Competition and Aks-i-Dilli: Online Photography Competition.
The Poetry Slam competition – “Shayanrana Dilli” had an interesting line-up of young poets from colleges across the city. They shared thoughts on the impact partition on the city, smog in the city, the vibrant culture of Delhi and experiences of the city on a personal level among other captivating themes! The Painting competition saw young artists engaged in creating beautiful art works. The Online Photography competition that was organised earlier on saw a range of entries being received on the Topic –Hypnotic Edifice- Resurrection Resonating in Architecture
Student representative Ms. Vidhi (Dastaan, President) welcomed HECS representatives, Ms. Geetika Gunjan (Programme Coordinator) and Ms Teresa Walter (Programme Coordinator). She also introduced the audience to INTACH and HECS and shared how Dastaan – The Art and Architecture Society of the College was augmenting the work of heritage education and awareness. Dr Amita Paliwal (Faculty member, JMC and Society Coordinator) facilitated the session proceedings and thanked INTACH HECS for their support and encouragement.
The annual Ahmedabad Filmit Festival was held on 14th February, 2019 at Shreyas Foundation. The Filmit Festival was organised in collaboration with the INTACH Ahmedabad Chapter which marks the culmination of the 11th Year. 60 students including teachers from 6 schools attended the festival. This project is currently running in 11 cities, with Kochi being the latest addition to this successful project.
The inaugural address was delivered by Mr. Pawan A. Bakeri (Co-Convener, INTACH Ahmedabad Chapter). It was followed by Ms. Shivaa Rawat, representative of Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) who welcomed the students and the teachers, giving them a brief introduction of the Filmit project. Mr. Abhay Mangaldas (Convenor of INTACH Ahmedabad Chapter) also graced the occasion.
An overview of the best films made by the students from Ahmedabad was shown. The students from each school were then invited one by one to share their Film It experiences. The students shared with great enthusiasm that the experience has been exciting, educational and fun filled. The overall best films made by other filmit students were screened. Mr. Pawan Bakeri appreciated the efforts made by the students and also praised that the quality of films has also improved. He believes that the awareness of heritage amongst the students have also widened. He stresses that heritage is not just something you see but it also includes our tradition, language, food etc. and one has to be sensitive and aware of things around us. Mr. Abhay Magaldas also shared of how one should go beyond learning about monuments and artefacts and try and focus more on our intangible heritage. One should be inquisitive. Both the resource person applauded the students and also encouraged them to make better films in the next project. The festival concluded with felicitation and distribution of certificates to all the participating schools.
The Annual Filmit India – Hyderabad Festival 2018/19 was held on 12th February 2019 at the Jubilee Hills Public School, Hyderabad. In the 11th year of the Filmit project, around twelve schools represented by 100 students and teachers enthusiastically participated in the annual celebrations. The programme began with a prayer by a teacher of the host school. This was followed by a classical dance performance by the students. The inaugural address was delivered by Ms G. Sridevi, Academic Director, JHPS. It was followed by an introduction to the Chief Guests, Mr. Chandrashekhar Singh (photographer – Nat Geo award Winner) and Mr. Anurag Singh (documentary film maker) by a student of the host school.
An overview to Filmit India in Hyderabad was shared by INTACH Hyderabad Convenor, Ms. Anuradha Reddy. Thereafter, students from each school made short presentations about their filmit experience. It included self-composed poems, speeches, dance performances, mimes and accounts from their film-making journey. This was followed by the screening of the Hyderabad films and the overall best films. The Chief Guests appreciated the efforts of the students and ways in which they had presented heritage through the prism of peace, harmony, diversity prevalent in the country. Mr Chandrashekhar Singh remarked that each film was unique and stood out in its own way. Mr. Anurag Singh said showed a film to the students that he had shot with a smart phone and told the students it was important to have a well planned story irrespective of the camera in your hand. The schools were presented with certificates and awards by the Chief Guests and Ms. Reddy. The festival concluded with a group photograph of all the participants with the Chief Guests.
The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) of INTACH organised the 11th Filmit India Festival on 8 February 2019 at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi. Students from over 34 schools were a part of the Filmit India Festival - Delhi for 2018-19. The festival was a celebration of their efforts and focussed on showcasing films made by students on the theme of Peace and Living in Harmony with Heritage.
The programme began with a welcome address by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH) who spoke about the Filmit journey and its expansion to 11 cities, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Varanasi and the latest addition, Kochi (where Filmit is a part of the Kochi Muziris Art Biennale). Thereafter, students shared the joys of filming, how they learnt about heritage and their Filmit experience in the form of songs, speech and poems. The chief guests Mr Vinod Nagpal (an eminent actor), Mr M.K. Raina (popular actor and theatre artist), Mr Rahul Tewari (young actor and theatre personality) Dr Shobita Punja (Art Historian, Former CEO National Culture Fund and Founder of INTACH HECS) and Ms Gillian Wright (Journalist BBC, researcher, radio producer, translator and writer) were appreciative of the films screened and the thoughts presented by the students.
Mr Vinod Nagpal commended the students and their films saying that they expressed and executed their ideas really well. He shared that children are adept and articulate at visual communication. Mr M K Raina praised the films and the concerns brought out, focussing on the theme of peace and harmony, he also shared the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, encouraging them to evolve a better understanding of humanity. Mr Rahul Tewari lauded the students for their great ideas and thoughts put in the films. Dr. Shobita Punja congratulated the young film makers for their passion, energy and efforts. The address by the chief guests was followed by the felicitation and award ceremony of the students.
The Annual Filmit India – Kolkata Festival 2018/19 was held on 6 February 2019 at the Birla High School in Kolkata. In the 11th year of the Filmit project, around sixteen schools represented by 100 students and teachers enthusiastically participated in the annual celebrations. The programme began with a welcome song and prayer by the students of Birla High School. The inaugural address was delivered by Ms Kanchana Mukhopadhyay (Co-Convener, INTACH Calcutta Chapter). It was followed by an introduction to the Chief Guests, Mr SV Raman (Programme Consultant, Victoria Memorial Hall) and Mr Saheb Bhattacharji (young actor and TV personality from the Bengal film industry) by the Co-Convenor.
An overview to Filmit India in Kolkata was shared by INTACH HECS representative, Ms Shivaa Rawat. Thereafter, students from each school made short presentations about their filmit experience. It included self-composed poems, speeches, songs and accounts from their film-making journey. The screening of the best overall Filmit films from India was followed by the best Kolkata film screenings. The Chief Guests appreciated the efforts of the students and ways in which they had presented heritage through the prism of peace, harmony, diversity prevalent in the country. Mr SV Raman (Programme Consultant, Victoria Memorial Hall) remarked at his long association with INTACH filmit programme and the journey in Kolkata. Mr Saheb Bhattacharji (young actor and TV personality from the Bengal film industry) emphasised on the role of youth as young citizens and their positive contribution in heritage conservation. The pedagogical shift in education and classroom learning through the Filmit project for heritage concerns was re-iterated by both. In addition to, students appreciating the opportunity to make heritage films on Kolkata and raising their awareness about the heritage across the various other Filmit cities too. The festival concluded on a positive note with an award ceremony and felicitation of all the Schools by the Chief Guest.
The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) Division of INTACH in collaboration with the INTACH Goa Chapter organized the Filmit Festival in Sharada Mandir School on 5th February 2019. This was the 11th year of Filmit project in which 11 schools participated from Goa and produced more than 40 films this year.
The program started with the welcome address Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH. Ms.Datt welcomed all students and teachers and spoke about the Filmit Project and INTACH. Ms Fatima Da Silva Gracias, Convenor INTACH Goa Chapter then spoke about the INTACH Goa Chapter and the work undertaken by them. The Chief Guests for the event were Ms. Nalini Sousa- a film maker , director and producer who has produced 75 documentatries showcasing different aspects of Goa .; Mr. Siddesh Gaunekar- an animation artist who has worked on India’s first fully animated film - Hanuman and was also awarded for his contribution to the short film he Stone Crusher in 1999 , and Ms. Nilima Menzes, representative from Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts, Goa.
The students then shared their Filmit Experience through presentations which included poems and speeches. The students shared how they enjoyed learning about their heritage, their city and the learning experience. Students also thanked INTACH for providing them with this great opportunity.
Thereafter Best Films from each school were shown followed by the screening of Overall Best films from all cities.
Following the screening of the films the Guests shared their views. Ms. Nilima Menzes, appreciated the students for their efforts and said that she would also like explore the field of film making with children at Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts
Mr. Gaunekar and Ms. Sousa shared words of encouragement and appreciation to the students. Films like Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary by Lourdes Convent High School and the film on St. Augustine Tower by Sharada Mandir School were appreciated for their techniques and good narration. The guests said that film making should bring out the personal journeys and stories. Film Making is all about the Masala and how you use the masala is up to you. It was shared that a two minute film should be simple but packed beautifully.
The program culminated with the distribution of certificates and Awards to all schools. The Overall best film award was received by Navy Children School for their film "Peace and Harmony".
The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) of INTACH in collaboration with the Helen Hamlyn Trust UK, pioneers the Film It programme, which seeks to impart to the idea of heritage education, dynamism in the form of short films which are conceptualized and shot by children.
This project is currently running in 11 cities with Kochi being the latest addition to this successful project which has completed over a decade in India. The annual Film It festival for the city of Varanasi was held at W. H. Smith Memorial School. 68 students and 11 teachers from 8 schools of the city participated in the event.
Principal of W.H. Smith Memorial School, Ms Anita Pauline Dey, extended her warm welcome to the students and teachers. In her address to the students she said that cinema is a wonderful medium of learning and students should use this opportunity to learn and grow.
This of followed by a welcome address by Mr. Ashok Kapoor, Convener INTACH Varanasi Chapter. Mr. Kapoor shared with the audience his long association with the school and the warmth that he has personally received from the school and its founders. He shared his fond memories of coming to the school on various occasions and thanked the principal for supporting the initiatives of the Varanasi Chapter
Ms. Shivaa Rawat, HECS Representative, addressing the audience spoke about the Film It project and its objectives, she shared that the project is now running in 11 cities and how the project has allowed students not only to think creatively but also to express it through the visual media of films.
The festival saw the screening of the best overall films from 11 cities, which was then followed by a screening of the best films from Varanasi schools.
Chief Guest Prof. Pradosh Mishra in his address to the audience thanked all the dignitaries and the host school, expressing his pleasure on being part of the festival and for being able to come to the school again. Prof Mishra shared that he has also been a long associate of the school in various capacities. He was really appreciative of the films made by students and added that watching the films was a wonderful experience and that this will prove to be a stepping stone to a journey of self – discovery, he further added that this film making journey of the students will help them reconnect with themselves and once that is done, the discovery is put out for others to understand, so in essence it is a practice of reconnecting with self, your predecessors and your practices.
After his address, the participating schools were felicitated. The films made by students were also awarded in various categories. The festival ended with a commemorative group photograph.
The Filmit Festival in Jaipur was organised on 1st February 2019 at Neerja Modi School, marking the culmination of the Jaipur phase of Filmit Project 2018-19. Ten schools from the city were a part of the programme and made around 60 films on different themes related to heritage this year. Over 90 students from these schools and their teachers attended the festival. Ms Beena Kak, eminent politician, activist, writer and actor was the Chief Guest of the programme. Ms Dharmendar Kanwar, Convenor, INTACH Jaipur Chapter and Ms Indu Dubey, Principal, Neerja Modi School also graced the occasion.
The event began with Ms Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS, INTACH, introducing the Filmit project to the audience where she shared how over the years the project has been witnessing great films all across the country. She also briefed the students about INTACH and its functioning. Thereafter, Ms Kak addressed the audience. Sharing different anecdotes and personal experiences, she encouraged the students to preserve their heritage. Focussing on the rich heritage of Rajasthan, Ms Kak emphasised how film making can be used as a great medium to spread awareness about India’s heritage and culture. “Go ahead with your camera and preserve our heritage”, she concluded.
Best film from each school was then screened for the audience. Following the screening, student representatives from five schools shared their experiences of the Filmit Project. The students described how Filmit opened new dimensions of heritage for them. Exploring their local heritage while keenly working on the technical aspects of their films, made an important part of the students’ experiences. In the next segment, best overall films from different cities were shown. This was followed by remaining student representatives making their presentations. Students used interesting ways like self composed song and poems to encapsulate their film making experiences.
Ms Beena Kak, after watching the films made by the students, congratulated them for their hard work and innovative ideas. She praised the students for their skills in film making, narration and how they have effectively captured the glory of monuments and culture in their films. Ms Dhamendar Kanwar also addressed the students. She expressed her happiness over Filmit Project’s success and how the films made by students have been evolving every year.
Ms Indu Dubey, Principal, Neerja Modi School also commended the films made by young film makers. This was followed by distribution of awards and certificates to all the schools. The event concluded with Ms Purnima Datt congratulating all the schools and felicitating the Chief Guest Ms Beena Kak.
On the occasion of INTACH’s Foundation Day celebrations, the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) organised the Monument Speak Competition for middle school children on 29 - 30 January 2019 at INTACH New Delhi. The two-day competition was a creative presentation (play or song) on a local monument selected and adopted by the school students. A historic city with diverse tangible and intangible heritage assets, the programme helped young students establish a better understanding of Delhi’s heritage by documenting it and speaking about it through HECS Monument Speak initiative. The programme was attended by 162 students from around 22 schools across the two days. Students drew creative inputs from the various INTACH heritage education activities, workshops and trainings (theatre, dastangoi, calligraphy) to prepare their unique presentations that were indeed interesting and captivating. It was heartening to observe the enthusiasm and efforts put in by the students, in an attempt to document, as well as, speak about their respective monuments. While the first day (29 January 2019) was a play competition, the second day (30 January 2019) was a song competition. The schools appreciated the platform to adopt their local monument and the opportunity to showcase young talent.
INTACH Ambala Chapter celebrated the 70th Republic Day with school children on 26 January at the Indira Chowk with great ‘josh’. The event was led by the INTACH Convenor, Colonel R D Singh where nearly 40 children and teachers from various schools participated and raised the national fervor displaying patriotic banners, placards and waving the national tricolor flag. NCC cadets from the Army Public School paid a befitting tribute to our martyrs and soldiers. Colonel R D Singh, himself holding a big motivational board, stood with children, motivating the people. The participants displayed banners and placards on the great freedom fighters and our national heroes. They also displayed photographs of the achievements of great Indian culture and heritage. The Indian women achievers were also highlighted. Mrs. Madhu Singh, a senior teacher in the Army School, Ms. Reena from the Cantt Board School Parade, Mr. Ashish from the Army School, Ms. Monika from the CB school, and many others joined the children in making people proud of our country and its people. As they all said in unison – Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Matram, Salute to our soldiers, hamare shaheed amar rahe, hamara Tiranga uncha rahe, Ham Ek Han etc. The commuters and people around smiled and cheered the children. They were very happy to see patriotic feelings shown by children. After the awareness rally at the Indira Chowk, the children carried out a Republic Day march on the GT road, to motivate more people. They sang patriotic songs and showed banners of our national heroes to people. People in the streets, and shop keepers, cheered the children, and many of them joined in the march. The event raised a patriotic fervor, and a salute to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. INTACH Ambala Chapter celebrated the 70th Republic Day with school children on 26 January at the Indira Chowk with great ‘josh’. The event was led by the INTACH Convenor, Colonel R D Singh where nearly 40 children and teachers from various schools participated and raised the national fervor displaying patriotic banners, placards and waving the national tricolor flag. NCC cadets from the Army Public School paid a befitting tribute to our martyrs and soldiers. Colonel R D Singh, himself holding a big motivational board, stood with children, motivating the people. The participants displayed banners and placards on the great freedom fighters and our national heroes. They also displayed photographs of the achievements of great Indian culture and heritage. The Indian women achievers were also highlighted. Mrs. Madhu Singh, a senior teacher in the Army School, Ms. Reena from the Cantt Board School Parade, Mr. Ashish from the Army School, Ms. Monika from the CB school, and many others joined the children in making people proud of our country and its people. As they all said in unison – Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Matram, Salute to our soldiers, hamare shaheed amar rahe, hamara Tiranga uncha rahe, Ham Ek Han etc. The commuters and people around smiled and cheered the children. They were very happy to see patriotic feelings shown by children. After the awareness rally at the Indira Chowk, the children carried out a Republic Day march on the GT road, to motivate more people. They sang patriotic songs and showed banners of our national heroes to people. People in the streets, and shop keepers, cheered the children, and many of them joined in the march. The event raised a patriotic fervor, and a salute to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in association with INTACH Kasargod chapter has organized ‘Bapu Khagol Mela,’ at different places of North Kerala where Mahatma Gandhi visited as a karyanjali tribute to Gandhiji, from 22nd to 24th January 2019 in collaboration with many organizations. The following are the locations and list of activities conducted along with Bhapu Khagolmela.

Chief Guest on the Occasion was Shri V. P. Appukkutta Poduval, Freedom fighter and a known Khadi protagonist. Introductory Address was given by Dr. P. I. Devaraj, Asst. Another function was held at Nileswaram in Kasargod District on 23rd January at Rajas High School, a more than a century old School in Nileshwaram situated behind Nileswaram Railway station, where Mahatma Ganadhi alighted once from his journey and delivered a speech to the public. Rajas High school possesses a letter written by Mahatma Gandhi. Mr. K. Sureshan welcomed the gathering and presided over by Dr. V Jayarajan, Convener, INTACH, and Kasargod Chapter. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Shri K. R. Kannan, veteran Freedom Fighter and inaugurated by Shri. K. P. Jayarajan, Chairman of Nilewsaram Municipality. Other digniatries were Muhammed Raphi, Municipality Standing committee chairman, Karunakaran, K. P. Manoharan, Udayavarma Raja, Madiyan Unnikrishnan, K. V. Raghavan, K. Sasidharan Adiyodi, K. V. Narendran, P Shaji Vishwas, Sheeja Aravindan, Kalasreedhar and P. Pradeep Kumar. Mr. Shri Soy Varghese, Principal, Jawaharlal Nehru Govt. H. S. S, Mahe welcomed the guests and was presided over by Dr. V. Jayarajan, Convener, INTACH, Kasargod Chapter. The programme was inaugurated by Shri. M Raghavan, Novelist. Dr. Gireesh Kumar, Prof. M G Govt. Arts College, Shri AK Sureshan Master, Smt. Sajitha Bhaskar, Shri. Anand Kumar, Shri. P. The College Heritage Volunteer Workshop organised by INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) was held on 18 January 2018 at INTACH New Delhi. The workshop was attended by over 70 participants, including, undergraduate college students and faculty members representing 12 colleges of the Delhi University.
The programme was inaugurated by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service) who encouraged the students to become a part of a national movement to saveguard their heritage. It was followed by a detailed presentation on understanding heritage by Ms Purnima Datt (Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service). Thereafter, Prof. A.G. K. Menon (Advisor and Chief Consultant, Delhi chapter INTACH and Founder Member INTACH) who spoke about Heritage-based Development of Delhi and its related conservation issues. Dr Narayani Gupta (Historian and Former Director, Documentation Centre, INTACH) who discussed Historic Delhi - Its Heritage and the Role of Youth. Dr Padma Rohilla (Art and Material Heritage, Centre Coordinator INTACH Delhi) offered an understanding Material Heritage and the restoration work undertaken during a guided tour of the INTACH Conservation Laboratory. It was followed by a Heritage Walk to the Lodhi Garden by Dr Swapna Liddle (Convenor, Delhi Chapter, INTACH). In the final segment, students made group presentations highlighting ways in which they could promote Heritage in their respective Educational Institutions and their contributions as College Heritage Volunteers. The workshop concluded with words of encouragement by Dr. (Mrs) C.T Misra, Member Secretary, INTACH and a commemorative group photograph.
INTACH Varanasi organised clay pottery workshop under Creative Workshop project of HECS DIVISION INTACH DELHI. The workshop was held on January 16 and 17 at INTACH member Sunbeam School Bhagwanour. Around 60 students participated in the two days workshop where traditional Potter Sanju Prajapati demonstrated the technique with potter wheel. The workshop was organized to sensitize the students not to use plastic but such earthenware and also to understand this great heritage. HECS DIVISION has supported such workshops in Varanasi last year also when a 3 day workshop was organised and later during heritage week in November 2018.
As a part of heritage awareness programme for our member schools, INTACH Varanasi Chapter organised Heritage Walk for Sunbeam School Bhagwanpur students. 30 selected students along with their teachers were taken around on January 18, 2019. Mr. Ashok Kapoor, Convener of INTACH Varanasi Chapter explained the students about importance of such walks. He took them to Chintamani Ganesh Temple which is part of 56 Vinayak Yatra of Kashi. The proper history of this temple is not known as it is very old. He explained that Ganesh Ji is worshipped first so the walk is being started from here. Heritage walk specialist Mr. Jeremy Oltmann how is also a Life Member of INTACH took over the walk. He briefed them about the places they visited such as: Ram Krishna Paramhans Charan Paduka, Gauri Kedar Temple- One of the oldest temple of Kashi, Rani Bhawani Mahal, Lanes of Kedar area and Chousatti area. The Chapter is also planning such heritage walks for school students every month besides Heritage Walk for members which is another very popular and much sought after programme of the Chapter.
INTACH Varanasi celebrated Foundation Day in a different way this year. Students of Little Flower House, Nagwa Branch and Kakarmatta Branch were taken for Heritage area photo walk. The walk started from Assi Ghat. Various heritage sites and spots were seen by them- Sangmeshwar Temple ( this is one of the temples where Panchkoshi yatris have darshan) , Rani Laxmi Bai Birth Place, Tulsi Ghat, Temple established by Goswami Tulsi Das, Ark Vinayak- the first deity from where the 56 vinayak yatrs commences, lolark kund, surya temple, the water works building which is a heritage property, Shivala Ghat, Mata Anadmayee Ghat . Students took breakfast at this ghat. Eminent photoartists Shri Binay Rawal explained the photography techniques. Mr. Hemant Sarna , Member INTACH explained the importance of each place and site and also gave the history. Mr. Ashok Kapoor Convener, Mr. Nalin Gulati Co Convener, Mrs. Anjila Agrawal, Life Member, Mrs. Sangeeta Jain, Life Member, Mr. Ravi Agrawal, Life Member were present. Mrs. Aditi, representative of INTACH member Little Flower House, kakarmatta branch was also present. Around 20 students participated in the programme.
