COCONUT SHELL CRAFTS

Coconut trees are highly valued by the residents of Lakshadweep. They expertly transform coconut shells into gorgeous handicrafts, showcasing their exceptional craftsmanship. These shells are crafted into different items such as ladles, spoons, cups earring, pendants, lamps and chandeliers which reflect the islands culture and heritage. These crafts reflect the remarkable craftsmanship and sustainable use of natural materials.

LACCADIVE JEWELRY

Lakshadweep is known for its ancient jewelry-making traditions, which have been passed down through generations. The jewelry is expertly produced by local craftsmen using a combination of designs made of gold, coral, and pearls. The patterns often reflect the island’s natural beauty, with motifs influenced by sea life and local flora.

MATS AND WEAVING

Lakshadweep culture is deeply rooted in weaving. Weavers on the islands expertly make mats and baskets from coir, a fiber extracted from the husk of coconut and screw pine leaves. FISHING BOAT OF LAKSHADWEEP

Lakshadweep island have a rich fishing tradition, and the boat used are unique as there their techniques. Odum and Machhwa are two main fishing craft found in the island. Odums are built from coconut wood and coir and are traditional sailing vessels. They are ideal for deep sea fishing journey, particularly for tuna fish. Machhwas are used for lagoon fishing and close to shore operations. They are built with a dugout hull and a single mast with a mat sail. A huge part of the population in Lakshadweep depends on the fishery resources which is also the main livelihood of the inhabitants of the islands.

TORTOISE SHELL CRAFT

Tortoise shells found on the beaches form an attractive natural resource for the craftsmen in the island. Craftsmen in Lakshadweep use these shells to make table lamps, small boxes and other ornamental items. Tortoise shell craft was once a part of islands artistic heritage; however the practice is no longer encouraged due to conservation effort to protect sea turtles.
